    Rooster mix MA/NH

If the Auction is there every week or every month: go back. Confront the seller. This cockerel is probably sold as a pullet on purpose. Trade the cockerel for the hen you paid for at the auction. Trading a cockerel for a hen is definitely not easy and maybe impossible. If you have room and...

    Irresponsible cat neighbors?

I have locked up a neighbour cat in the chicken run several times, one time overnight. Two cats like to hang out in the chicken run. The sand-bath spot (warm and dry) is favourite. 😻 If the neighbours miss their cat in the evening at dinner time, they come to ask if she is in our barn or in...

    Irresponsible cat neighbors?

We don’t have cats of our own, but very often we have neighbourhood cats in our yard. The cats are free to go outside day and night/ part of the day depending on the neighbour. Some people have indoor cats too. Personal choices. We cat-sit the neighbours cats when they are away on a vacation...

Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

If the chickens can escape, the dog can get in the chicken yard for sure. Dogs are great tunnel diggers. If you don’t trust your dog with the chickens you’ve got work to do.

Question of the Day - Tuesday, April 29th, 2025

No. No need. All milk from the shop is pasteurised or sterilised and homogeneous. Only occasionally when I make a cappuccino, I blow hot steam through the milk.

Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Cultivated hawtorn starting to blossom in our garden. Its blossoming later than the original and has no torns. Gin, she loves to hunt for insects and snails. I suspect she even likes to eat the slugs. We had so many slugs last year :sick The snails and slugs loved to eat the chicken feed and...

    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

I think orange was the right color. Not safe. But not dangerous either (according to EU levels). I don’t understand why the lab was hesitating to share the results other than trying to tempt people to buy an expensive and better test.

    BDutch's bantam flock & natural breeding projects #5 🪺 🪺 and #6

This morning I got the PFAS test results I asked for. Not just the indication they send previously. Had to ask twice. The test values: PFOS: 1.97 µg/kg PFOA: 0.21 µg/kg PFHxS: 0.17 µg/kg PFNA: 0.27 µg/kg Total for the 4: 2.62 µg/kg PFOS is too high but still well below the EU standard for...

Topic of the Week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks

Don’t use a heat lamp or a heating pad with a broody! A broody is the perfect heat source for chicks. If it’s too cold for adult hens to go outside its not a good time to give eggs to a broody. If you have real cold temperatures in winter it’s better to wait for spring.

    Microplastics!

The plastic rubbish is not the main problem for the health of everything that lives on the earth. The microplastics we don’t see who are worse. Microplastics are in the waste water of the factories that produce plastics. PVC/vinyl is a lot worse for the environment than the ordinary plastics...

i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

If you start rebuilding the coop, don’t forget to take photos and post them here! Yes. Two chickens is the absolute minimum. But best wait until you are finished rebuilding, there is not chicken-fuzz anymore, and you are sure there is space for 2 extra bantams. Two chickens with enough space is...
