My barred rock laid a gelatinous yolk. What in the world? She hasn't laid an egg in a few weeks. She has been in the box, but not laying. In fact, she hasn't laid since her bestie went broody almost 4 weeks ago. She's been treated for mites. There have been electrolytes in her water for a week...
I think I'll set up the plan B now in case. They aren't particularly valuable, just had my first broody hen and decided to throw some silkie eggs and a frizzle OE under her. She was sitting on golf balls and a quail egg we had. :)
So today is day 18. How do I make sure she is not disturbed...
All very great information, thanks, LofMc. Appreciate it.
I hadn't even considered needing to switch to chick starter. Yikes! Will get right on that. Will also double check the waterers.
This is my plan B. (The grow out coop, not the hubby in the chair.) :)
We have a broody golden laced polish/silkie mix who is sitting on 7 eggs (and anywhere between 1-4 golf balls at any given time). She is on day 18 today and has started hoarding the other chickens eggs. She hasn't really been doing this until yesterday and today. I'm hoping that means the eggs...
Huckleberry, the newfoundland, and Hershey the chocolate orpington chick. #brownoff
Taking turns. Ruger the black lab, Pollo the OE, Pepper the BR, and Quelvis the GLP. #stringcheeserules
Wonderful! Thanks for the information. I will definitely be in touch about possibly getting EEs or Ameraucanas from you. I told the kids we have to wait until the end of Jan because we are going out of town for a few days middle of January. They are anxious!

Greetings from Carteret County, NC. Coastal gal with a coop who is excited to join the backyard chicken family. Considering easter eggers and Ameraucana, although am open to suggestions for sure!! The Amber Star Hybrid seems pretty cool, too. Looking for egg layers.
Kids want to get chicks...
My family got me a chicken coop for Christmas (after lots of research and long discussions about adding backyard chickens to our life). The kids (13 and 9) are SO excited to get chickens, but I am trying to make sure we do our research, first. Our coop says it will house 3-5 chickens...
