I have a BO entering her second broody week and I want to stop it. I thought the cold would do it but nope!
So before what's worked is a broody cage for 3 days. But I can't do that as it's too cold for that, for her to not have body heat from the other hens at night.
You would *think that they would moult Sep/Oct to be ready for winter - Not IN winter when it's already freezing temps. But that's what mine are doing too! :D
Just a comment really. This is my first winter with chickens. I knew egg production lessened in winter but this is quite the drop off! 🤣
From 3 egg laying hens (also have 3 pullets). I'm getting MAYBE 1 egg every 4 or 5 days 🤣🤣
In summer I was pretty much 1 a day. Not really complaining. It is...

Hi, I've had my flock for about 6 months now. And almost every single night (probably 85% of the time) one or two of the girls sleep in the nesting box/es
I don't know why, and most of the time I will go in. Move them to the roost bar (a soft wood, rounded edge 3x2). And if it's dark of course...
OK dust bath is topped up with a bag of kiln dried sand and couple of big handfulls of DE. Lets see if they use it. I'll cut away the poop on her this weekend (joy of joys...)
hmm good point. They do but it's gotten a bit low recently and i've been meaning to top it up. I'll do that. I haven't seen them using it recently to be honest. As for when they free-range. I live on the west coast of Scotland (think pacific northwest climate) so it's rarely dry out! More mud...
Winter’s on the way, and I wanted a way to stop my chickens’ water freezing without wasting electricity running a heater all day, or overheating the water. So I built a smart system that automatically turns the water heater on and off depending on the temperature — and it’s working brilliantly...
