Does she have a good place to dust bathe? What is her diet? Some people do give chickens baths in water but I avoid this because it’s not natural and stresses the chicken out. A dirty bum can occasionally be a symptom of an internal issue but I usually find a good dust bath is enough to keep this from happening. You will get some more opinions.

hmm good point. They do but it's gotten a bit low recently and i've been meaning to top it up. I'll do that. I haven't seen them using it recently to be honest. As for when they free-range. I live on the west coast of Scotland (think pacific northwest climate) so it's rarely dry out! More mud than dust. I'll get their run dust bath filled up!

Yes it is better to clean the butt because more poop might stick to it... Wouldn't want to cut a giant stone of rock hard poop with Carpenter pincers again like I had to do with my last broody.

OK dust bath is topped up with a bag of kiln dried sand and couple of big handfulls of DE. Lets see if they use it. I'll cut away the poop on her this weekend (joy of joys...)
