DRY sand is very handy to have, easy to clean, and is very sanitary. Just stir it around everyday. Liquids do evaporate quickly in sand.
Sand will clump though, if it gets excessively wet. Change it out once a month, depending on how many chicks/poults you have.
Yes, the dander/fluff will contaminate your basement, dust will be all over everything. We had a dehumidifier in our basement and the filter was clogged everyday after cleaning it.
If you have some kind of shed, I would recommend using it.
I am raising 30 Narrangansetts this year . Some of them are around 5 months and I should say that the one you have should definitely be a female.
If you have other turkeys with it, it should strut or gobble.
