    Hatching keet trouble

Yes. We have an older female who sits on the nest every time momma gets up, but relinquishes it when momma comes back. And the crazy male... I did wonder if one of the adults had pecked at the 3 that were still in the shell as some of the shell was missing but the keet inside was still all...

    Hatching keet trouble

My guinea hen has been setting on eggs and they started hatching (not that she lets me near, but...) We had dry weather in the 90's in week 3 but got 5" of rain and 70-80 degrees in the last week of incubation. Don't know if that matters, though. But - so far I've found 4 eggs kicked out of the...

    Time between hatches under hen

Thanks! I'd actually been trying to encourage her not to set as we don't have a rooster, and every day we'd have to remove her from the nest box to get the eggs. Finally just gave in and put a few guinea eggs under her, which she seemed delighted to have.

    Time between hatches under hen

How long do I need to give a mama hen to recuperate between hatches? She hatched a guinea egg I'd put under her and is now raising the keet, but once it's old enough to be outside on its own, how long should I give mama hen to recuperate before letting her set on more eggs?

How long to give an egg after the other hatches?

Thanks for the input. Mama abandoned the egg to follow the keet, so I opened the egg. It wasn't a fertile egg, so no loss there.

How long to give an egg after the other hatches?

I put two guinea eggs, fertility unknown, under a bantam hen who wanted to set on eggs. 28 days would've been next Tuesday but one hatched on Friday (so 4 days early?). How long do I let the hen set on the as-yet-unhatched egg before removing it? Thanks!

How to cull a rooster when you don't want too?

I hate knocking off excess roosters or ones that have attacked my kids, too. After a very emotionally upsetting incident where I learned that "wringing a chicken's neck" doesn't actually kill the bird, I decided it was less cruel to set the bird loose where my eat-chickens-that-hop-the-fence...

    How long hen fertile for?

Here're photos. I'd thought birds could only store sperm for a few days, but all the posts saying a month or so make sense - the known rooster's only been away from the hens for 3 or 4 weeks, and they've only been laying eggs part of that time. Thanks!

    How long hen fertile for?

Odd question - I have 5 young mixed bantams (farm store purchase), one obviously a rooster and 4 probably hens. I separated the rooster from the others in early September, before the hens started laying, as the rooster was pestering the hens endlessly. About a week ago two of the hens started...

    Can raccoons...?

Does anyone know - can a raccoon cling to the underside of a wire shelf for long enough to climb over it? What I'm trying to describe is a 2x4 welded wire "shelf" installed horizontally about 5' off the ground (not sure what I'll support it with yet - L brackets of some sort), at 90 degrees to...

Guinea setting on eggs - advice wanted

I have a guinea hen setting on about a dozen eggs, now on week 3. I am not able to swipe the keets as they hatch to raise so plan to let momma do it (if any hatch...) What do I do about a waterer? I have read that for little keets you need marbles or something in the waterer to keep them from...
