    Rooster question

Thanks everyone. Guess I'll see what they do and then decide. All 3 of them are nice roosters, so I have hopes they'll peacefully coexist, even with hormones raging!

    Rooster question

They're somewhere around 6-9 months old. Found the chicks at the feed store sometime last summer but don't remember exactly when. And they looked so cute, and my little chick-bin was just sitting there empty... You know how it goes=)

    Rooster question

I have 12 assorted banties, 3 of which are roosters. One of them is definitely dominant and will chase the other roosters off a hen when she squawks at being mated. But all 3 roosters are friendly to people, including my 6 & 11 year old boys who check eggs daily. I suspect once breeding season...

    2 banties need id'd, please

I was kind of surprised to think it was one - that's why I figured I must've gotten it wrong. It was the only chick of that coloring in the "assorted" bin, but I wasn't the first shopper, either.

    2 banties need id'd, please

Oh, okay. I had no clue they were different colors or combs. Got lots to learn! Thanks!

    2 banties need id'd, please

Thanks! What makes you say cockerel for the brahma? Two of the cochins we got with him already have significant combs and are trying to crow. Or do brahmas get that slowly, too, just like his slow feathers? (I'm not questioning whether you're right or not, just trying to understand. I'm kind of...

    2 banties need id'd, please

Thank you! I'd wondered if it was some sort of brahma, but couldn't find that mixed color pattern in any online photos...

    2 banties need id'd, please

Good morning! I picked up some banty chicks at a local feed store. They are now 10 weeks old. I think the clean legged one (black and white lacing, labelled lace in photos) may be a sebright, but I'd like your thoughts on it and my other one. The other one (labelled mutt in photos) has feather...

    Hatching keet trouble

Yes. We have an older female who sits on the nest every time momma gets up, but relinquishes it when momma comes back. And the crazy male... I did wonder if one of the adults had pecked at the 3 that were still in the shell as some of the shell was missing but the keet inside was still all...

    Hatching keet trouble

My guinea hen has been setting on eggs and they started hatching (not that she lets me near, but...) We had dry weather in the 90's in week 3 but got 5" of rain and 70-80 degrees in the last week of incubation. Don't know if that matters, though. But - so far I've found 4 eggs kicked out of the...

    Time between hatches under hen

Thanks! I'd actually been trying to encourage her not to set as we don't have a rooster, and every day we'd have to remove her from the nest box to get the eggs. Finally just gave in and put a few guinea eggs under her, which she seemed delighted to have.

    Time between hatches under hen

How long do I need to give a mama hen to recuperate between hatches? She hatched a guinea egg I'd put under her and is now raising the keet, but once it's old enough to be outside on its own, how long should I give mama hen to recuperate before letting her set on more eggs?

How long to give an egg after the other hatches?

Thanks for the input. Mama abandoned the egg to follow the keet, so I opened the egg. It wasn't a fertile egg, so no loss there.

How long to give an egg after the other hatches?

I put two guinea eggs, fertility unknown, under a bantam hen who wanted to set on eggs. 28 days would've been next Tuesday but one hatched on Friday (so 4 days early?). How long do I let the hen set on the as-yet-unhatched egg before removing it? Thanks!
