Thanks for the update... I guess I will just keep an eye on it. Both of my Orpingtons decided to molt this winter too, but this ones area right at the base of her tail looked so similar to those photos that "hopsack" posted... Maybe that person will reply too. Thanks again!
Hello to all on this thread... I didn't see a conclusion to this on this thread. I have one of my 3 hens with this issue also. The area with the loss showing her skin is not as pink and "fleshy" looking more dark and coarse if I can describe it. She eats, is laying, and otherwise seems fine. its...
wow!! I continually learn about these hens. Mine have been doing this too and we just started getting eggs last week! Very funny how they fluff up after you pet them! I have 3, and only one seems to be doing this so far.
Thanks for the reply!! My nest boxes should be fine… They are getting protein too (worms, sunflower seeds, etc…). 2 Orpington's and a barred Rock. I guess patience is the name of the game. :) Plus they have free picking of oyster shells too.
Thanks-
Hi All,
I have 3 pullets (its almost January) and when I got them in mid-October they were supposedly 15-22 weeks old. So they could be 6 or 7 months old now. They seem happy, healthy, etc… NO EGGS yet… and they get plenty to eat and look fine. They don't seem stressed either. However, in the...

I am by no means an expert. But, I have read that stimulating a pullet's gland (triggered by light in their eyes) and I forget the gland name.. Essentially trying to get them to lay before they are ready, can cause issues in their vent (where everything comes out) which can cause serious issues...
Thanks for the reply. Also, is it normal for them to go in the coop during the day to rest... I just went to check on them and all 3 are in the coop, on the perch resting... all by themselves?
Thanks
Hi All,
I have 3 pullets who are about 16-21 weeks old. Doing great so far! I have a question about night time. It is starting to get a little cold at night and they go up in the coop like normal. However, they just sit on the ledge in the doorway of the pop door (I have a small piece of wood...
The only thing I would add regarding Nature knowing best is the fact that in the "wild", birds would use this time of year to recoup from the stresses of spring/summer and all that egg laying. It is also a time for most "wild" birds when nutrition is scarce. These are domesticated now and are...
Hey Chillin",
I am in MD too and just starting out with Chickens. I have 3 pullets not laying yet, but soon (I hope). My question for those of us that get cold winters... I understand the lighting to get them the light they need, but what about a little heat in the coop? If I use an old style...
Hi all,
Yet another question. My pullets seem to be doing great. I have egg layer pellets available all day for them and suppliment with some grass, worms, stuff I find in the yard. A little scratch for treats and meal worms too. Not a lot of those things. But, my question is, it doesn't seem...
