I am ordering some ribbon from Amazon today! Thanks for the tip..
I'm also keeping the goats in that area for now. We have plenty of roosters too. We don't get many losses usually but when we do they always get our favorite ones....
I agree, I'm on hawk watch right now. I just walked out to find he had gotten one of our silkie mamas. I still have one hen unaccounted for. I'm not sure how many they will take in one day. He got a baby a few days ago, we watched him fly off with it in his talons. I love my hens free ranging...
Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking its a type of splay the more I look. Her legs go out in front of her which causes her to fall back on rump. She can get on them occasionally. BTW...Chicks can be born with contagious diseases?!
Hi,
I have a chick that seems to put weight on her legs but definitely isn't walking normal. She seems to put her weight back on her rump. Her toes seem normal and her legs don't seem to be abnormal. She can get around a bit. She's definitely wobbly and unbalanced.
Any ideas?
I have two moms and 4 chicks. The first two chicks are about 2 weeks old now. The other two chicks are between 1 and 2 days old. I have one hen that is a good mama so she abandoned her eggs and I have one hen who is a good incubator so she's "kinda" abandoning her chicks. It seems like she won't...

EDIT!
Hi! I'm too excited and in a rush to look through the forum to see if my questions are answered but here is my situation :

Hi! I'm too excited and in a rush to look through the forum to see if my questions are answered but here is my deal:
1. I have a hen separated in a shed in a dog kennel sitting on eggs that are just starting to hatch. She is in the general area that the other chickens are.
2. I have two others...
Ok, and thanks for your reply too. That doesn't seem so bad. Plus if they are in the garage, we can keep a better eye on them when they are hatching. Do you think I need heat lamps, etc. or does mama keep them warm enough after hatch?
So I have a Swedish Flower Hen that tends to sit in the nesting boxes on the eggs. She doesn't stay there all day and moves if I shoo her off of them. She tends to want to sleep on the eggs at night. Is this "broody"? I'm thinking about letting her hatch out some eggs...
Also, I asked this...
Well thanks for the reply! I was hoping I could do it with as little human intervention as possible! Only because I would love to see the process of a mother hen solely responsible for her chicks since I have my own two "chicks" to take care of and one on the way! Oh well... I'll just wait...
I have a SFH that seems pretty broody. I usually have to convince her to get off of the eggs that I collect everyday. I was thinking she would be a good candidate to sit on some fertile eggs. I have 8 hens total and I am wondering how the others would respond to the new chicks, also, is it...
My hens get out of their pasture once in a while and my new dog will chase them and twice I have caught her on top of the hen playing with her but never hurting her. The hen would lay there limp and then get up, shake it off, and I'd get her back in her pasture. I was wrong to assume my dog...
Thanks for your help! I held her on her back, my mom held her beak and neck steady, my husband put mineral oil in her eye then pulled it out with the tweezers... It was HUGE... almost an inch long! We followed up with some eye solution and she seems to be fine. It is open, it looks normal...
