    Feeding chicks?

Well, that wasn't the ordeal that I thought it would be. I only got a few half-hearted pecks from Mom. I dipped their beaks in the water, but they were only interested in the feed. The other birds were out in the run, so I let the chicks scratch and peck around for about 25 minutes before giving...

    Feeding chicks?

They're in a bank of nesting boxes mounted about 1.5 feet off the ground. To get to the food and water either the hen or I are going to have to take them out. I'll check back in a bit and take them out, if she hasn't done it yet. I'd better get some gloves and long sleeves, 'cuz it looks like...

    Feeding chicks?

Hi All, So yesterday afternoon a got 3 Americauna chicks from our local farm store and put them under a broody hen at roosting time. I also made sure the food and water were on the floor of the coop and switched the feed over to medicated chick starter. The good news is that the hen accepted the...

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

Thanks for the info and the video. I really enjoyed it!

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

I meant that I'd wipe off the bloom and let it dry out. The websites I visited also said there was no need to drill.

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

Thanks! Now that you mention it, my two hens look a lot like Hoover's Hatchery black sex link. Well, I think they're lovely birds, whatever the breed! Best of luck with yours!

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure they're Asian Blacks, but it's the best ID I could make by looking at pictures on the internet. Our birds were a gift from a friend who got them from his "chicken guy". We knew we were getting two silkies, but we didn't know anything about the breeds of our other...

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

I've been doing a little internet research on them. Right now I think we're going to clean it and let it dry out so it can go in my girlfriend's printer's drawer.

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

LOL! "Fairy eggs"! That's a new one on me, but I'm just learning!

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

Interesting! It'll probably be included as something a little bit extra in my next egg breakfast.

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

Thanks, that makes sense. The golden comet and the two asian black hens are the only ones who lay brown eggs in the flock. We've only been getting two eggs a day, so one of those three is probably gearing up to start laying again.

Pullet egg or just an unusual egg?

Hi All, We just found the strange egg in the photo below this morning. It has a hard and fully-formed shell, but it's tiny (dollar bill and normal egg for scale). The hens in our flock include a leghorn, a silkie, two asian blacks, and a golden comet. Our chicks are a one-month old half...

New chick not under Mom's wing

One more update, for those who are interested. The chick is fine, and momma hen has shown it where the feed is (medicated chick starter, btw). Thank you all so much for your comments and help!

New chick not under Mom's wing

Thanks! The chick seems to be perfectly fine this morning. I think I just found the chick very shortly after hatching and it needed time to recover. These chickens are our first and we did not want or expect a rooster in the flock, so we were kind of learning how to raise chicks in a "sink or...
