    Heart Failure in chickens

Hey, I have a 2yo BO (Lil' Buff) who has a tight swollen underside/abdomen and I'm wondering if it's heart failure. Her comb is dark on the tips and she is lethargic. I checked and couldn't feel and egg inside her. Is there anything other than heart failure that it might be?

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

Hey, I have 6 straight run buffs from Cackle Hatchery and one (I think it's a male) has fuzz about halfway down his shanks on the outside. Is he really a buff or is this just some funky genetics popping out? He's 6 weeks old. The fuzz hasn't been replaced by feathers yet.

    Chicken Friendly Snail/Slug Detterent

I've been using a pelleted slug bait, Slug Magic, and it has worked extremely well. I picked it up at the local Ace Hardware, and I don't remember the exact price, but it was reasonable. http://www.bonide.com/products/product.php?category_id=903 It says it's safe around pets and wildlife so...

    Mostly Lame BR Hen

Okay, she is doing a lot better now. I've been doing some "physical therapy" kind of stuff and it seems to be helping. I'm holding her up so she can use her legs normally and remember how she's supposed to stand. Also, she laid an egg yesterday! Hopefully she'll continue to regain her...

    Mostly Lame BR Hen

Well, I would think if it's Marek's that it would be the neural form. Here's a list of the typical symptoms with Klutzy's symptoms in (parentheses). • Progressive paralysis, usually of the leg or wing, a typical leg-paralysis victim will have one leg extended forward and one leg extended...

    Mostly Lame BR Hen

If it is a tumor or Marek's disease, what should I look for? I can't imagine that she could go downhill so suddenly, plateau for a year, then go farther downhill if it's disease. I'm not ruling it out, I just think it's some unhealed injury from a year ago.

    Mostly Lame BR Hen

Could she be egg bound for a year and not die? She poops normally. I was looking at pictures of her, and in January of 2012, she looked fine. But around March, her bum was drooping. I wonder if it's from the time she jumped off my arm and landed really badly.

    Mostly Lame BR Hen

My Barred Rock hen Klutzy has been having difficulty walking for at least a year now. (She's 19 months old.) It seemed that she could not hold her tail up. When she was 6-7 months old I was holding her and she jumped down and crash-landed, plowing face-first into the ground. The past 2...

    Turkeys drowning in the rain?

Thanks for all the great responses! I had a sneaking suspicion that the "turkeys are stupid" mantra was merely an urban legend.

    Turkeys drowning in the rain?

I think most people have heard that "turkeys are so dumb that when it rains they look up and drown." Is that true? Are turkeys actually stupid or just misunderstood? People also say chickens are stupid, but since having my own I know that's not true and I'm wondering if it's the same with...

    roosters feet are swollen

Pictures would be helpful if you can get some. If it's frostbite, make sure your coop has good ventilation so that moisture cannot build up. Are their combs damaged at all? That's usually what gets frost-bitten. In really cold weather my chickens usually stand on one foot and tuck the...
