I had actually intended on getting a male and breeding them but I am concerned that may make it worse..
The attack is really random and no other injuries have popped up since. Nothing has changed in their routine/enclosure for weeks so I am little unsure of what to do. I am hesitant to...
This morning I went to go check on my quails and noticed two out of my four adult quails had injuries to their heads. One is minor with no feathers gone and a little bit of dried blood and the other is close to being bald on the top of her head with a lot of dried blood. We have placed...
I recommend planting kale or silverbeet in their enclosure, not only do they love to snuggle under it and hide, they really love eating it. You will need to ensure the plants are a decent size otherwise they will demolish it (quite literally).
@Borski 9 days in the incubator is too early to turn off the auto turner. The earliest you would want to turn it off is at 14 days (I have heard some do 13 days but can be risky).
I use a seedling heat mat as well to provide extra warmth with my Ecoglow as my house is a cold box at the moment with Winter. They love it and its peace of mind that it won't overheat while I'm at work.
I have heard that the reptile mats can be problematic and overheat with plastic brooders...
I am yet to have personal experience with adding younger quail with older quail (I will soon though), either way you need to introduce them slowly. Either separate your current enclosure with a wire screen (so they can still see each other) or place two cages/enclosures side by side for a few...
It really depends on your set up and personal preferences. If you are worried about them flying out or possibly injuring themselves, as long as you clip them properly, there is no harm done.
I was reading a thread recently on here about it. Might help you decide whether you want to or not...
@cwrite Good idea. Depending on where you live and if it is necessary, you could also look at cutting the mesh a little longer and sinking it a few inches into the ground to prevent any predators digging under it or pulling it up.
@cwrite We live in a residential housing area that is not close to bushland here, so thankfully we haven't had any run in with predators/reptiles.
I wouldn't be able to say if it is snake proof, however, they would have to be small snakes to get through the small avery mesh..
Thank your for all of your advice, it is greatly appreciated.
@jwalk2515 I have actually just purchased a seedling heat mat to use as extra heat in my brooder when the chicks hatch as I have an Ecoglow 20 and was concerned it wouldn't be warm enough during this time. It is arriving this...
Hi BYC, just wanting some advice/tips on how to stabilise the incubator during in Winter.
We are currently in the middle of winter in Australia and going through one of the coldest snaps we have experienced in some time. I live in the "Sunshine State" and it is currently snowing the heaviest...
Good idea!
Definitely recommend doing some research on quail chicks if you are going to go down that path. Many people seem to have trouble with them once hatched but others do very well with no issues.
If you don't have a local source for fertile quail eggs there are a few farms in...
Poultryitis is indeed very infectious...
I had extreme difficulty tracking down my first quail. I ended up doing a 5 hour round trip to get my first 8. Unfortunately they can be hard to get a hold of and get a hold of good quality/healthy birds, if you were in Queensland I would definitely be...
