Hi All,

After rescuing this little guy and getting 2 quail friends and then the 2 quail friends died... We have built a quail coop for it. We're just about finished and I want to put some branches and plants for him/her to feel at home. I'm in Southern California. Any suggestions? Thanks! I'm going to try and attach a picture of it's soon to be home...

I know that maple is safe for my chickens and chicks. Since quail don't eat the branches, I think most woods should be safe, though I would avoid branches with a lot of sap or a strong smell, like pines or cedar. I hear fruit trees are suppose to be safe, such as apple, and willow also.

I recommend planting kale or silverbeet in their enclosure, not only do they love to snuggle under it and hide, they really love eating it. You will need to ensure the plants are a decent size otherwise they will demolish it (quite literally).

Thank you. I'll start some kale in the garden this weekend and move it to the coop when it gets a good size. I have some white birch branches and olive tree branches I can use as well as some Small branches from one of my orange trees that died. Thanks!

No house plants with shiny or waxy leaves, no tomato plants, no avocados, no raw potatoes. Everything else is pretty much quail safe. Milo and millet will be popular with birds if you can grow them till they seed. If the cage doesnt have grit youll need to add it.

Thank you dc. Some good information there. I do have wild bird seed growing from, where the birds we feed drop it out of the feeder. I,cut some apple and lemon branches today. I also have some kind of plant that grows at the place we rescued this guy from. The quail seem to live in there. . I dug some out of the ground and will be planting it in a container tomorrow. All great advice. I'm so glad to have found this sight. Everyone has been so helpful. We finished the coop tonight. I can't wait to put my quail (we named it River) in it tomorrow. I hope river likes the new outdoors and seeing more then the inside of a cardboard Box. I still have to paint the outside and add a little trim and roofing material but figured I had time to do all that later. I'm so excited to see how River does. I got one of those pans you put under your washer and I'm going to be filling that up with sand/gravel. I built a little loft area so River can sleep at night where it's dark and enclosed on 3 sides. As you can tell I'm really into my animals.... No kids, just pets. :)
