I had 10 pullets with no rooster. They were all so sweet. One thing I did was to be quiet around them and not let them hear chicken noises, etc. if at all possible. Amazingly, they were so quiet when all grown up and made NO noises at all (until an egg was laid), then it was LOUD. But all...
I hope you found your australorps. I ordered 10 from Tractor Supply last October. They began laying at about 24/25 weeks. I only kept 3 since I live in the city and did not want to 'over do' it. They have not been around other chickens, so they only hear my quiet voice and no other chicken...
Simply buy some cheap top soil from big box stores and spread a bit on top each day. It will keep flies to a minimum and keep most smells at bay. And it creates wonderful garden soil.
I have been growing a small patch of Russian Red Kale. It is absolutely delicious! Easy to grow and bug resistant, too. I discovered that you can simply remove a leaf, place in water and it will grow roots in about a week or two. So I keep it going by putting a few leaves in one my...
I have raised my few coturnix for 3 weeks now on Manna Pro feed. They have done well and the smell has been manageable. I purchased some Nutrena gamebird feed (all I could get) and the smell is horrible now. It is 28% protein.
What is the least 'stinky' poop producing feed that is available?
Thanks for the response. Amazingly they are doing very good at this point with no extra heat. I guess the small tote and with a towel over the top and their body heat it is sufficient. They show no signs of being uncomfortable and are eating well. If they were in any other type cage I would...
I have 7 jumbo Texas A&M chicks. The are two weeks old today and almost fully feathered. They are in the house at this point (in a plastic tote) and we keep the temp at 70 degrees or so night and day in our house. I turned off the heating lamp yesterday and made sure that there were no...
My solution to these problems is to take offending bird and clip a small portion of their top beak with fingernail clippers. It does not hurt them and will keep them from killing the other birds for a few weeks til it grows back. Normally it puts a complete stop to the problem with that bird.
I had about 20 that were 4 1/2 weeks old and they started crowing at 4 AM and I live in a small subdivision with close neighbors. At the time, I was so frustrated with the noise, that all of those males went into the freezer. I even put them in total darkness in my garage and they never...
Not long ago, I had some ant beds in my yard and someone suggested putting instant grits on the mounds. Believe or not, the ants disappeared and have not come back. It killed them quickly. I am sure if you sprinkle dry INSTANT grits around the area it will work. Just don't let the quail eat...
Phals love bright light and humidity. They need temps of 60 degrees for two weeks at night to bloom. I keep mine outside until the temps get to 40 or so degrees, then bring them in the house.
The main thing to remember is to NOT water the plant unless it has mostly dried out from the last...
