This started appearing maybe 4 or 5 months ago, starting out small then ballooning to what it is today. My hen's age is around 8 years old so I'm thinking it could some form of cancer.
A red tail hawk has made several attempts the past few days to pick off one from the flock. Same time every morning. Although I have one bantam rooster who's really alert I'm afraid the hawk will catch one of my chickens 'slippin', as they say in the hood. Its war folks. Can a scarecrow make a...
What times during the day have these encounters taken place? I'm curious because a day or two ago my flock was screeching bloody murder around 6 in morning, and when I looked out my bedroom window I saw a red tail swooping down one or two times through the backyard. Thankfully, the chickens were...
I was thinking of using food too, but then I can't remember if there was a problem with my first flock. If predators aren't a problem you might leave them out until they just drop where ever they are for a few days as an experiment. They'll be a lot more docile in the dark to put in the coop.
I know, it's a weird question. I'm in the slow, gradual process of merging two flocks - on the one side there is the older flock consisting of a Buff Orp., RIR, and an unknown bantam breed; and the new comers are 7 week old red pyle bantams and G.L. Wyandotte. The RIR appears to be the most...
My hypothesis is the frogs my chickens encounter are normally stationary. I don't know how the hens will react when and if they see frogs hopping around. I hate to see them forego such a huge serving of protein.
Maybe 'afraid' is too strong a word. I'm curious if anyone has noticed this behavior among birds in your flock. I even tried tossing bread near the frog I found in my yard, with some crumbs landing directly on top of it, but these hens look at me as if to say, "we love bread but not that much".
