Quail love short tunnels. Take a cardboard box & cut out ends. They love it.
Mirrors. They love to look at what they believe are other Quail.
Dirt baths. Eventually we went to using ground feed. Bath material we would order either was infected or had toxic chemicals in it.
Love ankle socks &...
I realize these post are grandfathered but it's a topic of interest to us. For years we have occasionally researched the topic because we have a male button (pet) that frequently pecks at our feet and will peck you in the eye if you let him get close enough. Got me once & took a chunk.
What we...
Thank you 🙏
This is the same stuff I use on our cypress trees in the summer that I had in photo. Gro
Hadn't thought about using on ground to cool things down.
You're a genius.
Thank you so much 🙏
This is same stuff I use to protect our cypress trees tn summer grommets and all. Just buy it...
Great article 👍🏻
Can you be more specific on material. Some materials absorb heat.
I'm very interested in what you used. We live in Scottsdale, AZ and our ground temperatures can get to 180 degrees F at corners.
This might help take some stress off some of our plants near walls. Also...
2nd Update
The new cover is holding out. Secured tent stake that was in the pot deeply into ground so wind wouldn't pull off the sunshade.
Weathered another storm. Quail doing fine. The Quail mom is the one that picked the location unfortunately storm blew it off.
Luckily caught her off nest...
Update
Just checked at 9pm.
Good new she's on the nest 👍🏻
Bad news another storm brewing 😞
These are bad storms. Made complete mess of our property. Spent whole day cleanup and be doing same tomorrow.
Anything changes let y'all know.
Thanks
New to BYC. Took a while to figure how to attach picture. She looks fine, but she'll never make it another two weeks.
She had laid her eggs 🥚 in one of our tomato plant pots which was covered with sunshade.
No problem. I cut off the water and let her have the pot but yesterday we had...
We just had a vicious storm in Scottsdale, AZ. Our property is home to hundreds of Gambel Quail.
One's nesting cover was just ripped off by the vicious wind. We've lived here 30 years & worst wind storm in memory.
She has 7 eggs and bravely weathered the storm to continue to incubate her 7...
Doves successfully completed incubation and brooding cycle. Another successful year avoiding deaths due to owls.
Out of the nest after 2 weeks 2 days teaching them the ropes. They'll stay with them for two more weeks.
I would have had pictures but these were the skittish doves we've had to...
We've lived in Arizona for 30 years. In 2012 our friend and neighbor Lou passed. He would put rocks up on the top columns of his patio for doves to nest. Doves are horrible nest builders and often their eggs roll out of their flimsy built nest.
The neighbor who bought his home had no interest...
Yes, Teflon, or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), can be dangerous to birds. When heated to 530° F (280° Celsius) or higher, PTFE-coated non-stick cookware and other products release a clear, odorless gas that is toxic to birds. Birds are more susceptible to PTFE poisoning because they have a...
Setting up a perfect DIY brooder temperature control system on a budget.
#1. Most common is using distance between the brooder and the light.
#2. Is using a dimmer to control the brooders temperature.
#3. Is using a temperature controller.
#1 & #2 are the most common. I started with #1 in...
Final update...
Chick lived 6 days. It was a fighter. Always heard late hatch chick usually don't make it.
Strange it ate until it's death (liquid diet). Day 3 it got to 7 grams.
Day 5 lost it's gains.
This morning was struggling to live.
I stayed with it until it's death.
Buried him in...
Oh well 🙁 trouble in paradise.
He was doing fine in encubator yesterday his first day. Eating crumble and watermelon for moisture.
Had 2 dark green runny poops but from what I read on BYC that's not unusual for first 2 days. First time for us though. In past all quail chicks we hatched had...
