    Broody hen issues

I'm on my 6th broody of the season. 😬 I didnt realize until 2 days ago one of the hens I hatched last year had laid her own nest under one of our brush hogs. My son found it and let me know. She had 20 eggs! All but two were brown, so most were hers but another hen also found it at some point...

Frozen tundra = another frozen water/bust waterer

What brand water bowls do you use? I'm on the hunt for a large rubber bowl since my plastic one has a crack (stomping ice). Ideally made in USA. It seems a lot of people complain about the smell of the black rubber and are concerned about chemicals. Have you noticed that?

    Six week chick leg injury?

Thank you. :) I'm hoping she's a she if she recovers. So far she's looking like a she, but I'll be so sad if we have to cull her due to this injury. I don't think I have any silkies. That makes me want to go out and examine all my hens feet to figure out who the biological mom is. 😉 She is...

    Six week chick leg injury?

I had a hen hatch 7 chicks about 6 weeks ago. One was significantly smaller than the rest and still is (about half the size now). The night before last I noticed it was limping. I waited to see if it resolved but it hasn't. Today I grabbed it out of the barn stall and checked it over. Looks like...

    Looking for old hen/rooster recipes!

Hello! We butchered 5 chickens last week- one 4 year old hen, one 2 year old rooster, and three 20 week old roosters. They've been resting in the fridge since last Wednesday afternoon. The meat is skinless and I have it divided into breasts and leg quarters. My husband will not eat soup. 😑 So...

Thanks! I'm using 2 tsp liquid corid per gallon. I was originally (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday) using .5 tsp powder corid per gallon.

    Probable Coccidiosis- Advice?

Hello! I had a sick hen (unsure of age but over a year) last Tuesday that died the following day. She had mucus-y poop and was acting lethargic. Two days later I had another hen die (also over a year but had been sick with maybe worms? And treated with ivermectin a few months ago). I had some...

    Hen Standing Around

I have a hen that I believe is about a year old, possibly two? (I have a mixed flock.) While everyone else free ranges she stands around pretty much all day. She is fairly thin (doesn't look it but feels like it). She sometimes tries to sleep in the nesting box but not always. She eats pellets...

How to cut the cost of feeding chickens?

I'm trying this with my leftover garden seeds: https://www.fresheggsdaily.blog/2019/08/save-money-on-chicken-feed-by-sprouting.html?m=1 My neighbor gave me some bean seeds she couldn't get to grow. It's a small operation on my countertop but we'll see if it works.

How to cut the cost of feeding chickens?

Even though this is an old thread I've enjoyed reading everyone's tips. I'm very much interested in mixing my own feed and had never heard of the black fly composting. I just started soaking some beans tonight to see if I can sprout them. And earlier tonight I was picking bugs out of the...

How long until your overwhelmed or tired of poultry

6.5 years for me now and I am tired of owning so many roosters! I've had 4 different batches of chicks this year, one from an incubator and 3 from broody hens. The broody hen process is amazing/addicting (and much easier to care for and integrate them into the flock!) until you realize 10 weeks...

    chickens not laying eggs...

I'm in the same boat. I have 15 adult hens (2 are currently setting/raising chicks) and 2 adult roosters. I also have a trail of different age chicks. I've been getting 5-6 eggs per day and also give feed in the am only and occasional scraps. My neighbor down the road has also been getting fewer...

    Rooster overload central Missouri

I have 4 roosters I need to rehome. They are almost 20 weeks and unknown breeds - some could be mixed? I got them as chicks from an elementary school that hatched them. I also have younger cockerels that will probably also need to be rehomed. They are 10 weeks.

Cheap building supplies are out there!

My husband would love this post. :) He's in the process of purchasing his first sawmill and has been running around picking up nice pallets from countertop businesses in our area. Our neighbor down the road built his whole shop using these heavy duty pallets. He bought a pneumatic punch nailer...

What breed is my broody hen?

Thanks! She does not have feathered feet. I'm actually not sure what color eggs she lays. I'm thinking she was one of the chicks my neighbor gave me from the elementary school. She told me the hatchery only gives them full breed eggs but I couldn't find any online that look just like her so...
