Last night I forgot to close my coop door, feel terrible as I lost one of my favourite gals. This morning I heard the others clucking around the yard, knew I'd messed up and tried to corral them back in the coop, they didn't want to near it,noticed one was missing so went on the search.

If I may hop onto your thread, I am in a similar dilemma.
I forgot to close my coop door last night and now feel horrible as I lost one of my favourite gals. This isn't my first loss to a predator, had skunks and dogs both kill my birds however whatever got into the coop last night had to get...
agree with most on here, no heat needed. protection from the wind and good ventilation is key. I live in Idaho, near Yellowstone, it gets to -40 on occasions and will not be above freezing for three or four months....never had any problems with the gals, I'm sure they're not overly happy but...
I had an Australorp, the only one so far that got caught by one of the neighborhood dogs.
At this point will have to see what's out there, but have had my eye on the Orpingtons for a while

I may have chosen a bulb with too much heat but they seem...

All three of my leghorns are losing their feathers at an alarming rate and one of them is now breaking all the eggs. For several days I've just found smashed eggs and not just in the boxes, I'm finding the remains all over the coop. any ideas?...other than making a big batch of soup
