    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

I need to get a video of this: Our chicks have chick start (dry) available to them at all times, I started feeding them the fermented feed of that very same chick start (with kefir) and they go absolutely psycho over it when I bring it to them, while they shun the dry stuff. I have never seen...

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

@DirtCreature, I think so far we only have 1 hatched out of 5 so far that is blue, those darn splashes always seem like they are 75% splash 25% blue in a splashXblue mating!!...not 50/50. Aww well I still like splash on the hens just not on the roos, bleh.

Setting eggs tomorrow night, 3/29/12, anyone want to hatch with us?

@ Cats cradle: I remove mine as soon as hatched, I don't like them clonking around all the other eggs. I realize this doesn't work for everyone, I'm in a high humidity area so it's really not too far off from the incubator humidity. So far I haven't had a problem with hatch rates doing this, but...

Integrating new pullets is not going so well...

What I do is have a full run, then separate it into 2 separate runs by running chicken wire through the middle, if that makes sense... this means you have to have 2 shelters though...This allows them to be protected but to get used to each other. We do this with our Nubian bucks that don't get a...

You should be good, I wouldn't worry about it, last year I hand turned and forgot a lot of the time, and they were still good. Wow! Your silkies were nice layers! I hope mine lay that well when they are in full swing.

Oh yes, I am already impatient! This is my first hatch this year and first hatch with my genesis hovabator so I am especially excited! Ours aren't very good layers, but their personalities are adorable and they do make great pets. I'm not much of a bantam person, but silkies have really captured me. We also had heard that they go broody easily which is actually something that I want more of in our flock, so that is a plus.

    Washingtonians

How did you poison the eggs? We have squirrels that steal our eggs, crack a hole in the top and eat the contents. I don't think a trap would be sufficient enough for them our hills are crawling with them! We try to shoot them everytime we see them...but they are learning to scat when we come around.

    Any BLRW breeders out here?

I'm with you, I'm looking for some new BLRW stock, eggs or chicks. I have eggs in the bator right now so I have to wait until the 19th of May or so before I can put new ones in.
