Busting Myths (mostly) about the Cornish Cross

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back. The chicks are 6 weeks old today and I feel like I’m running Jurassic Park rather than breeding chickens. They’re HUGE!! The smaller chicks in their pen think they’re their mothers. It’s very apparent that growth rate didn’t slow to a normal pace and it’s...

Busting Myths (mostly) about the Cornish Cross

20 Cornish cross chicks have hatched with several more due in the coming days. They’re the chubbiest chicks I’ve ever seen but are doing fantastic. Most are pea combed (from their sire) with clean legs but several also have single combs and feathered legs. All are white colored but few have...

Male or female? 6 weeks old

If only 6 weeks old, you’ve DEFINITELY got a rooster.

Busting Myths (mostly) about the Cornish Cross

Update: I now have around 45 Cornish Cross eggs in the incubator!! Around 30 of which are due in the next few days. The CX hens have proven to be some of the best laying hens I’ve ever owned and are faithful, daily layers of HUGE brown eggs. They started out laying a few double yolkers but it’s...

    Humidity

Ohhh I gotcha. That’s pretty smart! No they don’t necessarily have to be the same as long as it fluctuates according to the outside (indicating good ventilation). As long as they’re gauging similar levels and there’s not drastic differences, I’d say you’re good!

    Humidity

I don’t think there’s a humidity level that interferes with chicken health at all. As someone from the south, I can tell you that atmospheric humidity levels literally cannot be any higher during the summer months here and chickens carry on as normal. If it’s the coop you’re worried about, I...

    Genetic anomaly all male chicks?

I’ve always read that the hen’s contribution that determines the sex of chicks. I have individual hens that produce more cockrells vs hens, more hens vs cockrells, or 50/50 no matter what rooster they’re paired with. Seems to be consistent with every hatch from each individual hen too rather...

    Crooked breastbone...can I do anything?

I have 8 liege fighters are just under 4 months old. They outgrew the growout pen and have been in their permanent pen for about a month now with a coop that has branches built in for roosting. I noticed this last weekend when I picked one up that a few have indented keel bones in the exact...

Can I deworm cockrells intended for meat?

Well I went ahead processed 5 of the roosters. Three of them were in good shape and made respectable dressed birds, but the other two had absolutely no meat anywhere and the breast meat was only about 1/2 an inch thick if that much. At least they aren’t consuming anymore feed.

Can I deworm cockrells intended for meat?

Thanks! And I agree. I normally never deworm or medicate simply because it weeds out weak and susceptible birds out of the flock but since I won’t be using these for breeding, and I want to maximize the use of these, I had considered giving them a low dosage to reduce the worm load enough to...

Can I deworm cockrells intended for meat?

I have several Brahma cross cockrells that are intended for meat and they’re very worm laden. I normally NEVER medicate meat chickens (or my others for that matter) unless absolutely necessary but these cockrells contracted coccidiosis, recovered, and while the immune system was down, became...

    2021 Breed Suggestions

YESSS!! I’ve always wanted to get either porcelain or spangled OEGB’s. And I understand about the Orps. I have jubilee, BBS, chocolate cuckoo, grey cuckoo, and black Orpingtons running all over the place. I used to have a pair of coronation Sussex that I thought were great. HUGE too.

    2021 Breed Suggestions

They were online. I was looking at leige fighters in a rare breed Facebook page and saw the post about brabanter chicks. I inquired about them and almost bought them but I had my mind set on buying the liege chicks. I had seen the liege right before and decided just to use the money to buy a few...
