The first egg can be soft, but you want to be very watchful about her eating the eggs. You need to try and get the egg before she develops a habit of eating them. Most people don't keep hens who eat their eggs. But let's hope she had a time of confusion and won't do it again. Once she starts to...
The first egg time could take a while. She might be feeling the need but doesn't quite know what the feeling is. I would pay more attention to if she is not eating or starting to look lethargic. If she starts looking like she is having trouble (breathing hard, etc) you can soak her in warm water...
This is probably her oil gland. Is it at the top of the base of her tail right at the beginning of her tail feathers? If so it is her oil gland. She uses it to waterproof her feathers.
I don't think there is much else you can do for her. If she isn't up and hobbling around in a couple more days I would start to think about end of life options. Not being able to walk is no life for a lil hen. But give her a couple of more days.
ahh, good to know! That is VERY helpful. I won't be making soup out of her yet, but I will definitely try to stay on top of this issue. Thank you Thank you! She doesn't mind the spa treatment and I don't mind pampering her, so we will see how long she can last with this defect. How old were your...
My heart goes out to you. Unfortunately there really isn't much you can do. They are weird little creatures. They can be totally hurting and not make any noise if you touch the spot that is sensitive. I have a hen limping and I have checked her little body all over and don't see one thing wrong...
okay, here is a good one for all you chicken aficionados. I have a year old bantam leghorn. She has been a delightful little chicken. Unfortunately she has started a strange and unhealthy laying issue. She won't lay an egg for weeks. As time passes her backside gets totally covered in poo...
if she has been kind of lagging behind everyone else for the past couple of days she may have something more serious going on. Or is is really hot where you are, if so, she could be having heat exhaustion. Don't give her dog antibiotics. the dosage would be wrong. if you must go to tractor...
i am not by no means a seasoned chicken person, but i wouldn't go giving her too much medicine. I would separate her to a quiet place, put out some food, water, and if it is a big enough area, maybe even put her brooder light on her and just let her relax. She could have had a squabble with the...
Definitely a hen. A very pretty one at that. Don't worry about the feisty attitude. Some hens are just like that. She may calm down after she gets relaxed and has her place in the flock.
I just recently got chickens and I have a 15 year old terrier who, as far as I know, has never seen a chicken before. I spent a lot of time with her while holding the baby chicks and letting her smell them when they were young. Now they are 6 months old and quite big for her to want to mess...
we had elder berries growing and the chickens LOVED THEM! they pooed blue for quite a while. look for a berry bush that has blue/purple berries that are dropping on the ground where your chickens can get to them.
I have a 6 month old super sweet Dominique rooster. He has just now become the main man and is learning all of the rooster duties. Just recently he has started swaying his head every once in a while. It is like a quick left to right motion when one of the hens is doing something he doesn't like...
