Slipped Tendon Leg Injury, keeps happening in the flock

Hello, I'm trying to figure out what is happening with my flock and why. Three times in the last year I have had a perfectly healthy chicken start limping and then progressively get worse, with one seemingly bad leg. The chicken will limp worse and worse, then eventually try to hop on one leg...

White Leghorn x Easter Egger Americana

Hi, I have a question, I am thinking about breeding my white leghorn hens with my Easter egger rooster. I remember reading a while back that some people are intentionally breeding this cross for desirable characteristics. Does anyone know anything about that? Does this cross have a particular name?

Fighting Mama Hens - What should I do?

Ok. I caught them fighting again and both had blood dripping off of their combs and waddles. Yikes!

Fighting Mama Hens - What should I do?

Hello, I have a flock of 15 hens that free range in a large fenced yard. I currently have two hens with baby chicks, and they keep attacking each other! They never fought before they had chicks, but now they go at each other like a couple of roosters. They have all the space in the world, but as...

Float Testing, Checking Egg Viability For Late Or Overdue Hatching

Hello, I have a question and I hope one of you can answer me. I have a nest of fertile eggs that are on day 23 or 24. All the eggs have hatched except one that is peeping audibly but has not pipped. In other words the shell is completely unbroken. This egg has been peeping for about two days...

Is there a trick to Encourage a Hen to go Broody?

Well, I'm not having the best luck with broodiness... I had a leghorn/farm cross hen sitting on a nest of 7 eggs. She was acting very broody, so I moved her to a private coop with 7 fake eggs and she stayed very broody for about 24 hours. Then after about a day she stopped all broodiness and...

Is there a trick to Encourage a Hen to go Broody?

Ok, great advice thanks! Should I confine her in the private coop with the eggs, as they gradually increase to 8-12? Otherwise, the whole flock free ranges during the day and goes to the coop at night.

Is there a trick to Encourage a Hen to go Broody?

Hello, I'm wondering if there is a way to get a hen to go broody? I have a 3 year old BO that was broody last summer and raised a batch of chicks. I'd really like her to go broody again this spring. I've tried setting up a nest of golf balls, and I've tried isolating her in a private coop with a...

    Broody Hen Thread!

Can someone give me their opinion? I have two 7-8 month old hens that are exhibiting broodiness off and on, sometimes for part of the day. Is there a way to encourage them towards full broodiness? I also have a hen that has been broody several times in the past and raised a batch of chicks last...

    Idaho?

Hello Idaho! I'm in the Boise area and I'm looking for fertilized eggs to give to a broody hen, later this spring. I would just like to know what's available in the area. I am particularly looking for Olive Eggers, Americanas, or the chocolate brown egg layers. Thank you!

    Broody Hen Thread!

I did put a golf ball in the nest, and she also sits on the eggs that were laid that day by all the hens. Today she was mad at me trying to gather all those eggs, but I left the golf ball. A few hours later that hen was off the nest and out wandering around the yard. Hmmm...?
