    Lost another hen...

    I just lost a chicken too.....same MO! I found he tucked in next to the feed can, checked her for physical issue....nothing. She died within 5 minutes. I have a cement floor so no dirt issues and I use bales of wood shavings for deep bedding. No answers as to cause!

    Deep Litter: Why 12 inches?

    Mine runs about 8 inches. The girls scratch around and bury the poop regularly. This way the under wood chips heat up over time and i just keep layering til the weather breaks. I am careful to watch for ammonia smells though things stay nice and toasty.

    Hi, I am one of those soft hearted souls who uses a heat lamp. But....I only use it during the really cold stretch we get in NE . Can't stand the thought of frost bite even though the girls are closed in when the sun leaves their yard! I have four pullets getting ready to join the older girls...
