We started with four 8-week old pullets. I would love to have some day-old chicks, but we have 2 large dogs and 3 cats indoors...can you say chicken nuggets?!?! Starting with pullets has worked well. They were already feathered out and went right into the coop - no brooder, no heat lamp (we...
Mine are waiting on the other side of the pop door for me to open it and out they come!! They hear me walking down the hill to their run and they are ready to go! Sometimes it's hard to get them back IN
We don't let our dogs near the chickens....not willing to risk it. Sometimes the dogs will go down to the run and look at them...but we don't let them linger. And if the chickens are out in their tractor, the dogs are in the house. Some people are comfortable with letting them all run...
I've heard you should give them cat food - higher in protein. Scrambled eggs too...I use ACV in their water all the time - they are not old enough to molt yet. I read it helps to keep internal parasite levels down...it's funny - if I don't give them the ACV in their water, they won't drink it!!
When a pullet is close to ready to begin laying eggs, they do the squat. They squat down about half-way, spread their wings a little and point their tail feathers down. They are basically "presenting themselves to the rooster". And they view YOU as the rooster They will continue to do it...
We are using DLM for our coop...every afternoon when I go to collect eggs, I bring a plastic bag (from grocery store) full of shavings and cover the "overnight" poop (which we all know is HUGE). My chickens don't stay in the coop all day - they have a 12 ft. X 20 ft. run. I did my first...
Physically place them on the roost bar when it gets dark. They will stay there - they can't see in the dark. It may take a little while, but they should get the point sooner or later. Mine used to sleep in a pile in the corner...took about a week and they all were roosting like they are...
We had it too...when we first moved out to the country all we had was dial up...not even DSL. So we got HughesNet. Wicked expensive and I spent more time sitting and waiting than I did surfing. And when the weather was bad, forget it...sometimes couldn't get on for days. And the modem kept...
It's a personal choice. We just started with our 4 ladies this past spring, so we have a long way to go. But our intent is that once they stop laying, they will go into the stew pot. They are livestock for us - not pets. Good luck with whatever you decide!
