This is Butters, he/she is 14 weeks old. I know orpingtons are notoriously hard to sex. No crowing. Not overly dominant, but higher on the pecking order. Some threads I read look at feathers too help...
So I got two new pullets yesterday from one of my students family farm to replenish my flock after too many straight run cockerals. 4 out of 6 :(
Anywho, I know that one I got is a barred rock but the other is a......?
Rhode Island Red?
Production Red?
All these pullet choices make me feel better. I got 7 straight run chicks one died and 4 are for sure Roos and with my barred rock wattles getting a little red I panicked! If I ended up with 5 Roos and 1 pullet with winter coming I'd stress!
This is my first round of chickens. I can only have three hens in my town but originally got 7 because they were straight run. One died the first week and the remaining 6 left me with two hens only. I will add more but wanted to wait till spring. It's about to start getting cold here in Minnesota.
If I wait the 12-16 weeks to butcher them will they be okay to keep together till then? Is it beneficial to butcher one a week to avoid shock since the flock is small?
So I have 6 straight run chicks that are 7 weeks old. 3 are definite rooster and 2 are definitely pullet and I'm calling one a "wait and see" even though I'm pretty sure I'm just in denial and it's a rooster. Anywho... I'm really in no hurry to remove the roosters yet even though I eventually...
It's all good :) I'm in denial! I've got six chicks and three are without a doubt roosters and 2 are pullets. The orp is my one in question and hope for another pullet, since I can only have three hen in town where I live.
