So this is a strange story and there isn't really anything to be done at this point, but my husband and I are still curious. One of our muscovy hens hatched 2 ducklings out of 7 eggs. When I opened the other 5 eggs to see if they had even developed, they all had fully formed ducklings in them...
So things have gone from bad to worse unfortunately. Our hen that had been brooding until we determined all of the eggs were dead has been acting a bit stressed (not surprising) the last 2 days since we took the eggs. This morning I noticed she has a large number of feathers missing on her...
I candled them last night and couldn't see much so this afternoon my husband and i water candled them. None of them moved and only one had an air pocket (floated). We then decided they must all have died so we cracked them open. All had ducklings in various stages of growth (2 even had...
We have had one of our Muscovies sitting on a nest of around 7 eggs for 35 days. I know the time might be off by 1-3 days since I was not watching her 24/7 to see when she started sitting full time. I candled some of them a couple of weeks ago and saw veins and movement in one for sure. My...
I haven't seen her outside of the hutch in 4 days so hopefully she's having fun in there and won't get bored *fingers crossed*. Also we have moved the other duck laying area to inside of our chicken coop, which seems to be working splendidly. The rest of the girls seem to be leaving her alone...
Ok, thank you very much! I have put her own food and water in the hutch for her and the pool we have is right outside the hutch, so hopefully she will still go there. Can't wait to see if we get any babies next month. :)
Good news. She is now laying on them day and night!! :) I don't know how many of them will hatch, but we are pretty excited. I have put her own food and water in the hutch with her since she doesn't appear to leave. Is this necessary, or will she leave to eat?
I noticed one of our hens is laying on them at night, however during the day she is up foraging in the yard so I'm thinking those eggs might not be any good since they are going from mother's heat at night to on their own during the day. Should we lock her in the hutch? Sorry I'm asking so...
Darn. We were really hoping for some babies. We have 5 hens (2 khakis) so we have eggs aplenty. Luckily our 4 chickens are currently molting otherwise we would be swimming in eggs. How long should I wait to pull the eggs to see if any of them are going to brood?
Also thank you for such a...
Hello all,
So all 3 of my muscovy hens are now laying. When I cracked open one of the eggs the other day it was fertile so we have been leaving the eggs in the nest. As of today there are 18 eggs in the nest. Does anyone know how many eggs have to be there before my hens will start to brood...
Thank you for the quick response! We are probably only going to have one clutch at a time for hatching and eat the rest. We just want to make sure only the muscovy eggs hatch since we will be raising them for meat. We had to eat our KC drake a couple of weeks ago because he was too aggressive...
Please help if you can. We have khaki campbells and muscovies and we just found their first eggs this weekend (4 so far). The only problem is we don't know if they are muscovy or kc eggs. We are looking to eat the kc eggs and hatch the muscovies so any help is greatly appreciated!
I found...
This may be a silly question, but as this is my first time raising ducks, thought I would ask. We have khaki hens (for eggs) and muscovy hens (for meat). Therefore we want to collect the khaki eggs daily for consumption while leaving the muscovy eggs for offspring. Our hens are only 5 months...
I understand, but the reason we got the muscovies was to produce meat for us. We have our 2 khaki hens for eggs (plus 4 chickens). I don't think we need 2 drakes for only 5 females as we don't want our drakes trying to mate our chickens and hurting/killing them. I guess it will just be a...
