Okay.. new to this. I got my chicks in the spring, and they are now starting to lay. I have 9 (6 RIR, 1 australop, 1 buff orp and my grey silkie). A couple are laying on a regular basis now, including the Silkie.
I know Silkies are notorious for going broody from what I've read. So how do I...

Good.. glad to know it's not just my Silkie that "is special"! I think you are right about ramps. She starts up it, then backs down, then starts up again. She's slowly getting the hang of it.... I hope!
Been doing the light for a few days and now out of nine, 8 of them go to bed every night. Like clock work they all start marching up the chicken ladder into the coop, then up to the roost. That is... except my Silkie.
Not to offend any Silkie lovers, because she's about a cute as can be...
Well - it's been a long exhausting month and a half, but the coop is done and now the run!! Now I can sit back and enjoy watching them. I wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone at BYC for all the advice, pictures of their coops, etc.
It's my first time raising chicks, building anything and I...
Yea.. the light seems to be working! Or ... atleast for some of them. Last night I went and out of the nine girls, 5 were already in the coop and up on the roost. I still had to manually put the other 4 but hopefully it's a step in the right direction!
Thank you for the suggestion about the...
The girls have been in the new coop / run for about a week now. Each morning they are waiting at the door to be let out. The first few days I had to physically move them outside. Now they all run out the door to face the day.
However, each night I am having to go an take them one at a time and...
I'm new to chickens, just finished my coop last week, so don't have much experience. Here are my roosts and the chickens seem to love them so far. Mine are 2 x 3 with the wide side being the flat side. I also built ladders out of scraps. I think later I might make the ladder were they are just...
So.. not sure if this is the correct place to post. Anyhow.
The girls have been in their coop for about a week or so now. They are going on 8 weeks and doing great!
I just finished the "basics" of their run today, which means I have the whole thing covered in 2 x 4 welded wire. Starting...
I moved my girls out to the coop about a week or so ago and am almost done with their run. Everyone seems to be using the roosts I have at different levels and loving them, except for my one Silkie. Do Silkies not like to use roosts?
She should have no problem getting up to even the lowest one...
I don't have any experience, but I'm getting ready to add the run to my coop. I'm only going to use concrete on my corner posts, and maybe the "door frame" posts. I'm using landscape timbers instead of 4 x 4 treated.... they are SO much cheaper!
Sorry for posting here.. it's not technically about a coop. Does anyone know how to edit / change the "Subject" of a post, say when you update it with picture or something?
Thanks.
Questions about the run. The coop is pretty much done.
Getting ready to build the run. I plan on 1 x2 or 1 x 1 welded wire for the side and buried in the ground. I also plan on 1/2 hardware cloth for the bottom 3 ft. I have tons of hawks, so know the top will need protecting. Can I use...
Coop done.. well almost. Pics updated!
The inside is done. I'm probably going to go ahead and move the girls inside. I can always paint the outside later, but I need a break for a day or so and I'm ready to get the girls out of the sunroom.
Still gotta build the run...hopefully by this...
