Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

My young roo has recently been humping every hen in sight. Whenever the older, bigger, roo, sees this, or hears the cries of the hen, he comes running like a hero, knocks him off, and chases him away. The young roo isn't big enough yet to challenge him.

Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

My young roo could likely pass confirmation as a pure Rhode Island Red, but he's half Australorp by his dad. Funny how that can happen. His one and only nest mate, the black hen, is also half and half, but couldn't pass as a pure Australorp due to a rusty chest and neck.

Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

Yep, mine is now broad of body, tall, and his tail feathers are quite long and fancy. No doubt about it. He's a roo.

I've always wondered how chickens get along with parrots and such

That's hilarious. I would love to have seen that. Any pictures?

I've always wondered how chickens get along with parrots and such

That's funny. When I hatched out two baby chicks about ten weeks ago, after a few days it occurred to me that they were about the size of parakeets, and I wondered what would happen if a couple of parakeets were put in there with them, or if they were put in a cage with parakeets. PS I...

I've always wondered how chickens get along with parrots and such

Anyone have any video of a chicken or chickens that associate peacefully with a parrot or other large tropical bird? I'd be fascinated to see that.

Chickens: Once You Got Them, You Won't Pot Them! (or atleast this is my case)

Great story. I've also had a lot of fun keeping chickens. They're pets with the benefit of giving you eggs too. I have two ten week old chickens that I really enjoy. They've been free ranging during the day with my flock for several weeks now. At dusk, I go out there and sit in a...

Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

I just took this picture of my two ten week old chickens. These two are both the product of a Rhode Island Red/Black Australorp crossing. The one that looks like a Rhode Island Red I suspect is a roo. The black one I suspect is a hen, as she has essentially no wattle or comb. What say ye...

Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

Looks identical to my ten week old chicken. I'm thinking he's a roo too. I only hatched out two, and his lone sibling looks very henny in terms of her tiny comb and wattle. I'm hoping at least she's a hen, because I need another hen. I could use one extra roo, so my young roo is safe with...

Rhode Island Red Rooster or Hen? Help Please! (plenty of photos)

Yes, I'm curious too. I'm in exactly the same situation.

    Black Australorps broody

I gave an adult Black Australorp rooster a home with my free ranging flock of Rhode Island Red and Delaware hens last spring. He was fixing to be eliminated by the previous owner. He's not tame, but seems friendly for an untame rooster. I hatched out two chicks from him and a Rhode Island...

hawks and would a rooster defend hens

I saw a red tail hawk yesterday about 2:00 PM. My rooster was giving his very distinctive call of warning, and the hens all ran for cover. I then looked up to see it fly directly overhead pretty low, and then away to the east. Beautiful bird. Lost a hen to one before getting my rooster...

hawks and would a rooster defend hens

Necessity is a defense against of any malum prohibitum statute and many malum in se statutes. The taking of an innocent human life would be an example of a point beyond which the necessity defense fails. "Necessity A defense asserted by a criminal or civil defendant that he or she had no...

At What Point Do I Know My Chicks Have "Feathered Out?"

I want to know when I can take the EcoGlow radiant heater out of their box. They are currently about two and a half weeks old, and have lots of feathers. My home never gets cooler than 75 degrees, as that's the temperature I keep it for my own comfort. Their box is in a spare bedroom in my...

Chicks: I had no idea they'd be such competent flyers at 2 weeks

Today is day 13 since my two chicks hatched in the incubator, and I've been making a point of taking the top off their brooder every day since the day after they hatched to pick each one up and handle them a little, to keep them used to handling. Their flight skills have been developing very...
