Is our cockerel actually a hen?

That would explain the slightly lighter egg. Leghorns are white egg layers, and Rocks are brown.

Is our cockerel actually a hen?

Thanks! That makes a lot more sense.

Is our cockerel actually a hen?

You think so? This one looks so different from the others. The others have short little combs, and this one looks so definitely different.

Is our cockerel actually a hen?

Our mid-March pullets have recently begun laying in the last 6 weeks. We have 5 birds, and one looks more like a cockerel than the others (below), but we've been getting 5 fully formed eggs 3 out of 7 days this week. Last week or two we have gotten 3 eggs with paper thin shells, but now we're...

Second or third egg -stuck in feathers

We found our first egg yesterday afternoon (hooray!) and went out again to see if there was another after we heard an egg announcement. Lo and behold, there was! So we've collected 2 eggs. Then my 6 year old said, "There's something hanging from her bottom." When I looked at the hen's bottom...

    When will cockrels start crowing?

Thank you, GitaBooks. :) The comb is quite larger than his buddies', and it went red sometime last month. So we're right in calling him "Olaf" rather than Olga!

    When will cockrels start crowing?

We have what appears to be a Mr among our young flock. These were hatched around the 15th of March, so they are coming up on 4 months (16 weeks). At what point should we expect to audibly confirm that this is actually a guy, not a girl? "He" is a White Rock, and quite sociable.

    Rooster or Hen?

Those look like our white Rock, that is just one cockadoodle-do shy of being out of here.

How do you tell them apart?

How do you tell your birds apart? We've had 4 Buffs since 3/15 but can't tell one from another. What kinds of tricks do you have to distinguish birds in your flock? We have names for ours but can't really assign names yet. Ha!

    Gwinnett county confusion.

Are there any updates to gwinnett's stance on chickens? Or all pretty much the same as last year?

My chicks are flying ... duh ... but funny

That's hilarious. :) We had some hoppers early on like that and found that a fireplace screen works well as a cover on their brooder. It was in the garage and we were glad to have something to keep them safely contained.

Can we play "sex that chick" again?

We have 2 White Rocks among 4 Buff Orpingtons, and they are just above 4 weeks old. One of the Rocks is a bit "cocky" and has recently begin showing a red comb. Can you please give experienced eyes for me? Here is our potential "he". And for comparison, here is "his" clutch mate (left, facing...
