Our mid-March pullets have recently begun laying in the last 6 weeks. We have 5 birds, and one looks more like a cockerel than the others (below), but we've been getting 5 fully formed eggs 3 out of 7 days this week. Last week or two we have gotten 3 eggs with paper thin shells, but now we're...
We found our first egg yesterday afternoon (hooray!) and went out again to see if there was another after we heard an egg announcement. Lo and behold, there was! So we've collected 2 eggs.
Then my 6 year old said, "There's something hanging from her bottom."
When I looked at the hen's bottom...
We appreciate the positive votes by Commissioners Tommy Hunter , Jace Brooks and John Heard to pass the new ordinance allowing backyard chickens. Thank you Commissioner Hunter for distinguishing between the abandoned problem birds and cared for backyard chickens at the June public meeting...
Thank you, GitaBooks. :) The comb is quite larger than his buddies', and it went red sometime last month. So we're right in calling him "Olaf" rather than Olga!
We have what appears to be a Mr among our young flock. These were hatched around the 15th of March, so they are coming up on 4 months (16 weeks).
At what point should we expect to audibly confirm that this is actually a guy, not a girl? "He" is a White Rock, and quite sociable.
It looks like an amendment to Gwinnett county's chicken ordinances is on the table for this coming county commissioners' meeting.
You can look it up, and go support it, at the gwinnett county justice & administration building, Tuesday...
How do you tell your birds apart? We've had 4 Buffs since 3/15 but can't tell one from another. What kinds of tricks do you have to distinguish birds in your flock? We have names for ours but can't really assign names yet. Ha!
That's hilarious.
:)
We had some hoppers early on like that and found that a fireplace screen works well as a cover on their brooder. It was in the garage and we were glad to have something to keep them safely contained.
We have 2 White Rocks among 4 Buff Orpingtons, and they are just above 4 weeks old. One of the Rocks is a bit "cocky" and has recently begin showing a red comb. Can you please give experienced eyes for me?
Here is our potential "he".
And for comparison, here is "his" clutch mate (left, facing...
We've set a branch in the brooder for our 3-4 week old chicks, just for fun. They have rested on it, even fought over who gets to sit in the highest spots. Is that OK or should we pull the branch out?
Our 4 week olds still "cheep" but it's getting slightly lower in pitch. They're "chirping" more than "cheeping". That hardly makes sense, but I think chicken people may get it. :)
Honey is not recommended for human infants, due to the risk of botulism. I imagine it may be risky in brand new chicks. I'd add some apple juice or some other sweet juice, perhaps maple syrup, to the water for the first day or two.
What differentiates ventilation from drafts? How much vent do you need and when chickens want to be away from drafts, does that mean you just close up the wall joints so there aren't cracks?
