Hi all, I know this is an old post but thought I'd give my 2 cents :) I've noticed that ours are substantially quieter when entertained. Each night when I shut the coop I try to put something entertaining for them to do until I let them out the next morning. Sometimes I dig over a patch of...
I agree, getting absolutely soaked and cold is probably not good for them. Mine always seem to know when enough is enough though and will run for cover to prune and ruffle if they feel too wet. Ive not know one to voluntarily get itself soaked, so as long as shelter is always available (and...
I have a little bantam pekin that looks exactly the same! We've only had her for 2 weeks and I have no idea if its normal or indicates health issues.. Did you ever find out? :)
Thanks eggcessive, poor girl passed away not long after I sent that message. She soldiered on and insisted on coming out on the lawn, bless her. I sat with her while the other chooks scratched and pecked about around her, and she passed fairly quickly and peacefully. I think she was happy...
Thanks again for the replies and suggestions. This morning she is really in a bad way..
I think it must be heart related as you say she has no other symptoms or sign of blockage. The bagpipes noise has lessened now but she is stationary, her hole face is darkening, and she is really gasping...
Hey, thanks for the reply :)
She is a Belgian D'uccle. Definitely not over weight, spends most of her time on the lawn foraging and scratching. As far as I can tell their coop and litter is all good too - not too dusty or damp. We keep their coop under our veranda so it never gets rained on...
Thanks for the reply eggcessive.
I'm not sure if she does have a respiratory problem, as the vet seemed to think she was fine in the respiratory department and it was her decreased heart function causing her to gape.. I'm always a bit weary of taking only 1 opinion though!
She is really...
Try nailing on a bit of that non-slip draw liner, the grippy stuff you can get in rolls.
When we first got our chickens they also refused to use the ramp.. They would all sit at the door with their faces poking out, but none would actually walk on it. They would sometimes fly in and out, but...
Hello all, thanks for reading.
About a month ago I noticed one of chooks was occasionally breathing with her beak open. She had no other symptoms but I took her to the vet for a check over. He said her airways were all completely clear and he thought it was likely a problem with her heart. He...
Sounds like it could be coccidiosis!
When we first got our girls one was constantly doing foamy yellow poos, but I didn't know anything about it at the time so just left it. A few weeks later she went off her food, became very lethargic and stationary. I scooped a sample of her poo into a pot...
Just in case anyone else has this problem - unfortunately I never actually got to try the Ivomec, so have no idea whether or not it is effective. When I went to give her some drops in the eye, the poor girl was so poorly I couldn't do it to her. She threw up some horrible liquid, and just of...
I've had her quarantined for a few weeks now, so hopefully the others will be ok.. I'll definitely keep an eye on them though and give the coop and outside area a good clean.
Thanks so much for your replies again paddock, I really appreciate it! I also didn't even think of eyeworm, but now it seems so obvious... Really hoping this treatment will help her out - it's worth a go anyway.
Good news, I was able to get some "Ivomec" (active ingredient: ivermectin)...
Thanks paddock, its a big problem getting hold of medications here in Australia :(
I think now that she has eyeworm - shes scratching at her neck and face and its all sore. One eye is totally closed, the other looks ok. I cant see any worms in there but right now it seems like it fits th...
