Possibly their food is moldy? But I don't think so because it seems from what I can tell that one gets sick, dies, then another takes the baton (as it were) and continues the cycle.

I just buried the one that was eaten and it appears to have died at least a few days ago (there was no flesh left on the bones) but I still think that it dyed before it was eaten.
