I have a bantam who should be hatching early next week (1st or 2nd I think.) Looks like she's only got one viable egg out of the five, but we might sneak some hatchery chicks under her to give it company Though the last time we went to get 'just a couple' to sneak under a broody, we ended up...

She's beautiful! Not an expert either, but I would say her feathering isn't loose enough, and her 'butt cushion' isn't full or fluffy enough. She has a profile more like that of a regular chicken, rather than the rounded profile they look for in cochins. I want to say her lacing isn't *quite* as...
I have a bantam hen who's sitting on a few eggs; she's been sitting for 8-9 days now. I have a few other hens in that coop (though that might have to change soon in light of recent events) and they have been laying all of their eggs in the nest box the broody is in. I've been picking the...
My blue copper hen was taken by a hawk Saturday afternoon, and if I can get one of my hens to set again I'm thinking about hatching her remaining eggs. Now, the most likely father would be my bantam mille fleur rooster. According to the chicken calculator...
If they see the coop as their home, they should automatically come back at night. Usually they register the coop as 'home base' after a week or two of being kept in the coop/run without free ranging. In my personal experience, they come home with no problem after that.
I've only raised three batches of chicks so far, and only 2 bantam chicks, both in my most recent batch last summer. I didn't notice any increased fragility with the bantams (a d'uccle roo and a mottle cochin hen) BUT they were hatchery chicks raised by a broody and not me. If you're having...
I have a question for all of you! I have a bantam mottled cochin hen and a bantam mille fleur d'uccle, and I'm thinking about letting the hen set on some eggs some time in the future. Do you guys have any guesses as to what the babies might look like? I'm not sure about the genetics, but I...
Just to bump this post- I'm curious about this also! I have a bantam mille fleur roo and a bantam mottled cochin hen, and I'm hoping to have the hen hatch some chicks someday. I'd love to see what a Gen 3 cross would look like!
Thanks for answering so quickly! It's good to know I'm not the only bleeding heart, haha. I know I overthink this stuff a lot, I just take animals very seriously, and I hate the thought of inadvertently causing harm or death if I don't have to. I'm going to take them before going to bed, I...
I live in NE Ohio, and I've moved my prices from $2 to $3 a dozen this spring to keep up with store prices (and due to the fact that I went so long getting almost no eggs from my four full grown hens this winter, with ten babies running around and eating all my feed lol.) I live in a fairly...
I have a 6 month old EE hen who has started showing some signs of being broody over they last week or so. Do to some outside circumstances I haven't been able to collect/wash eggs for a few days, which allowed them to build up a bit. She is currently sitting on twelve (!!!) eggs, presumably...
I have two EE's named Skipper and Skittle, a Buckeye named Bonnie and a Black Australorp named Clyde. I used to have a rooster named Jeremy, but he has since been rehomed. Clyde's sitting on some eggs, so I'll have to start thinking of more names soon!
I have a 1 year old EE rooster that I need to rehome; I don't currently have room for him, and (possibly due to space constraints) he is too rough with my 4 hens (it's also technically illegal to have a rooster in the suburbs). He hasn't attacked any people, but he is a bit of a bully with my...
