    Serious Injury

My flock wouldn’t be happy being kept cooped up. But, we live on 96 acres so keeping predators out is next to impossible. We do all we can for sure, but I just have to know that unless I pen them always, I’m going to lose one here and there. I don’t like it, but nature does as it was intended to...

    Serious Injury

Thank you. My chickens free range, so unfortunately, loss is something I have to factor in. We live in the country so the predators are numerous. That’s not to say I don’t take every precaution, because we do- but it was likely a bobcat that got her and how she got away was a miracle. I didn’t...

    Serious Injury

I just wanted to update all who posted and to thank you for the wonderful advice. I’ve had my chickens almost two years now and this was the first major injury I’ve had to deal with. I wrote down all the advice for future just in case reference. I did go ahead and decide to euthanize her based...

    Serious Injury

It is showing some improvement, but I’m just not sure it’s enough. There is some necrosis around the back of the neck but I expected that. I washed and removed that today.

    Serious Injury

It’s a rubber bottom. I didn’t want to use bedding so debris didn’t get into the wound. I laid down two nesting pads. I change them about five times a day.

The quarantine cage is completely separated from the rest of the coop. Its climate controlled. I opted to put her there as she panicked when I brought her in and wouldn’t settle down. I chose to put her out there to keep her calm. She drinks water all day, but hasn’t eaten.

    Serious Injury

She has a survivors heart for sure. She doesn’t fight my treating it and still likes to walk around and flap her wings when I let her out of the hospital cage!!!

    Serious Injury

She is in the coop in my quarantine, “hospital pen”. I’ve been providing wound care since the injury happened a week ago. My question was mainly asked because it’s my first serious injury to a hen and I want advice from others who may have experienced this. I’m willing to give her the care and...

    Serious Injury

I will post pictures tomorrow morning. There is nothing about the wound that can be “glued together. There is no skin left to repair. But I can’t explain accurately so I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

    Serious Injury

Hello All, About a week ago, one of my hens was seriously injured when attacked by some type of predator. I found her just sitting inside the coop. Her neck was literally ripped open. When she ducks her head to drink, there is only bone and tendon/ligament left. The neck feathers cover the...

    Fowl Pox

Hello all!! So I am fairly new to the chicken world. I made a rookie mistake. I bought all of my chickens as day old chicks from feed stores. I have 8 currently laying, two roosters and 40 some pullets varying in ages. I purchased 5 started pullets online from what I thought was a reputable...
