We have a large aviary 200sqft, but these are two boys I was contemplating culling due to having too many (hence the experiment). They have not had their wings clipped and no it’s actually been pretty easy to catch and locate them. One of them is really loud when he crows and they stick together.
Hello,
I’ve started letting two of my quail free range every day between 10am-4pm (to avoid prime hunting times for hawks, cats and owls). My two boys LOVE it. They hide in the tall grass and wander around pecking in the grass. It is a bit of work to round them up and catch them at the end of...
3 sides are 6’ concrete walls and the one open side has 1/2” hardware cloth 4’ tall. The top is 1” game bird netting but most of that is covered by tarps and shade cloth. Our whole property has 6’ concrete walls.
It is completely enclosed. I originally made the area for the quail but realized this would also be a perfectly safe area for the 2 sheep at night. The quail have bushes and concrete blocks with hiding places. The house in the photo is something I made for the quails but they don’t like it...
I can’t find anything on google about keeping quail with sheep. It would be about 30 quail and 2 miniature sheep in a 200sqft area (sheep would not be in there during the day as they would be grazing the grass, but would be in there from dusk to dawn).
Just an update, got him 7 brothers and sisters. Most are slightly smaller than him (didn’t want him to get picked on) and a few are about the same size. He was scared of them at first but then eventually snuggled in with them.
I only had one chick survive out of my last batch 😢. What do I need to do so that he doesn’t feel so lonely? Will he be ok? Can I put one of my adult hens with him?
They’re from my first batch of fertilized eggs from my flock. Some of the eggs were a bit smaller yes. They’re Celadon’s so seem to be a bit of a mix of everything. I’m not sure if any of my hens qualify as a jumbo but there are some that seem slightly larger than my tuxedos and Italians.
