Improving duck egg flavor & yolk

Outside, they have a larger enclosure but they are not free range because we have too many predators. They do feast on bugs in the summer but there haven't been any this winter. Also, there aren't any other animals around them.

Improving duck egg flavor & yolk

It said it embedded the images but I don't see them in my comments. I'll have to try again later today. Let me know if you need anything else. Thank you!

Improving duck egg flavor & yolk

Hi. Yes of course. Here are a few photos of their setup. They have about a 10 x 4 enclosure. There is a bucket for drinking water which is replaced twice a day. Everyday they are fed two 24 oz scoops of Purina Layena pellets. Outside they have a small makeshift pond but it has been frozen all...

Improving duck egg flavor & yolk

I have 3 lovely Cayuga ladies that have recently started laying. I am noticing a lot of inconsistencies in the eggs. Some of the eggs have orange yolks, others are yellow. Some have a very strong barnyard flavor, others are very similar to chicken eggs in flavor. I'm curious. Is there a way...

Will a goose protect my ducks?

Thanks for the recommendation Mrs Peters. I suppose I could get a pair of geese. Do you think two females would bicker with each other? Would two males fight? I know nothing about geese aside from observing them in wild-ish conditions. Down at our local pond there are several pairs of...

Will a goose protect my ducks?

I wonder if it has a particular influence over what breed of goose you have. A lot of predators can sometimes be intimidated by the manner and noises of other animals. I suppose that's why they recommend that you "make yourself look big" in front of a bear or mountain lion. I mainly ask...

HELP - One of my ducks pecked the other in the EYE!

I'm new to ducks as well. According to this article from Livestrong, ducks are incredibly resistant to castor beans. I wasn't worried they would eat the oil. I was just concerned that it might have a negative reaction on them. There's this great online book here that recommends using castor...

Will a goose protect my ducks?

That's good to know. I don't really want to have a whole flock of geese but I think one would be nice to have around for some extra protection or maybe a specific guard dog. I suppose the dog would be a little better with the defenses. Thanks for your response!

HELP - One of my ducks pecked the other in the EYE!

I noticed today that one of my ducks has a slightly swollen eye that he/she keeps closed. I've seen them peck at each other and I am moving them to a larger bin right now so they have more room and might be less prone to pecking (they're growing so fast!). I was thinking I would clean the eye...

Will a goose protect my ducks?

Hello everyone! I just got 6 darling little Cayugas that are 2 weeks old. The will be living up in the high mountains of Colorado. There are LOTS of predators here from foxes, coyotes, hawks, owls, bears, raccoons, and more. I've been in contact with plenty of geese and they seem to be...

The Duck-ponics Experiment - Raising minnows

We live in Colorado and the local pond has mallards that live it up year round there. I wouldn't expect them to be sensitive because they walk on the ice through the winter. It gets down in the negatives for several days out of the year as well. Perhaps these ones are just resilient?

    ducklings scared

Oh and 1 more thing. After I clean their food plate, I make sure that they see me put the food into the bowl. They come running up to the plate with no concern over my hand. Then I usually keep my hand for a while so they get used to it being around. I love them.

    ducklings scared

Hi! How old are your ducklings? I'm new to raising ducks and I have some 2 week old cayugas. There's a few things I've noticed that really help them feel more comfortable around me. 1. If I pick them up I always support their feet and keep their wings under my hand. They seem to freak out...
