What is the best way to cook the bird?

Thanks for the encouragement! I did cook him tonight. I rubbed him with olive oil and seasoned him with sea salt, pepper, rosemary, and some generic poultry seasoning I had. I browned him on the stovetop with minced garlic then put him in a small casserole dish and added some lemon pepper...

What is the best way to cook the bird?

I killed our first rooster a week ago. He was about 11 weeks old, unknown breed. After we started plucking him, we realized just how small he was but decided to go ahead with the rest of the processing for the practice of it. Once we got him done, we decided that maybe we would try to eat him...

    Hi from St.Paul MN

Welcome! I'm just over the border in Hudson, WI and we just got started with chickens this year also. We're loving it so far. We finished our coop a couple weeks ago. We bought 8 straight run chicks from a nearby poultry farm at the beginning of June but it looks like 5-6 ended up being boys...

Whats the most humane way to kill a chicken?

Quote: This really helped me. I had read through several threads and watched some YouTube videos but method described in this link is what I ended up going with when I killed my first chicken tonight. I planned to use the broomstick method but once I had him in my arms, it felt more humane...

I know - bad luck with my first flock! I went with straight run from a poultry farm near me. Won't be doing that again! I just ordered four new female chicks from Meyer Hatchery and culled the first of the boys tonight.

Thanks! I took a closer look at #8 today and definitely saw the Ameracauna, especially as I compared him to #7.

"You could post photos of your others here or at "what breed or gender is this," so someone may be able to ID them for you." Thanks, I did that just before this post. Those two are definitely not the only roosters, unfortunately. I think we've got at least 4, maybe 5 or 6, out of 8.

You definitely think #2 is a roo and #8 is an Ameracauna, not a Blue Orp? Any others in agreement/disagreement with the conclusions here? We're culling #1 and #8 tonight and wonder if we should go ahead with any others for sure, before they even crow. Thanks again! Cassi

Shoot - so five out of eight are Roos? Ugh! And no Ameracauna hens. Bummer!

Hi everyone, I have been reading on this site for several weeks now but decided to finally post an introduction and I posted some questions about breed/gender on that thread also regarding my flock. I am new to backyard chicken raising. We got our first 8 chicks on May 31st and were told...
