we have been building our coop for the last 8 weeks and just got our three ladies over the weekend! they are Rhode Island Red, Barred Rock, and Ameraucana and are about 2.5 years old. Boom, Shaka, and Laka! Im sure we'll have lots of questions and Im so glad to have this site!

WELCOME to BYC, so glad to have you here! You'll be able to find oodles of information on pretty much anything you need to know about poultry on this forum.

I do want to let you know that hens 2.5 years old will be getting toward the end of their best laying years, so don't be surprised that they slow down in their laying next year. :) But enjoy them!! They're SO much fun to have around.

thanks! :)
yes we know our "old" ladies wont be the best layers but we wanted some hens to fill our space and to get us into the swing of things with this chicken parenting. we are getting 6 chicks in the spring.

Welcome! I'm just over the border in Hudson, WI and we just got started with chickens this year also. We're loving it so far. We finished our coop a couple weeks ago. We bought 8 straight run chicks from a nearby poultry farm at the beginning of June but it looks like 5-6 ended up being boys, so I'll be culling them and my 4 new female chicks will be arriving via mail order tomorrow or Wednesday.

Enjoy the site - I've gotten so much good information here already!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations on your new hens! You've given them some cute names.) If you haven't done so already, definitely our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with Boom, Shaka, and Laka.
