Leg issues rooster and a hen

I did forget to mention that my friend lives in the country and there are a few larger chicken operations nearby. There haven't been any reported illnesses that we are aware of, but I may try contacting the local county extension office to be sure...

Leg issues rooster and a hen

Thank you! I remember learning about Mareks in vet tech school, but that was 20 years ago, so I appreciate the refresher. I haven't rechecked the roo's leg (his name is Uther), but plan to do that tomorrow. My Initial assessment 2 weeks ago was that his hock was loose which is why I thought...

Leg issues rooster and a hen

Unfortunately, it's not easy to find a vet around here who will see chickens Thanks for the suggestion! I will try to get pictures and video tomorrow (hard to do since I won't have help, but I'll try).

Leg issues rooster and a hen

So, my flock lives at a friend's home and she called me 2 weeks ago to let me know that one of my roosters was limping pretty badly. I went out to look at him and he let me catch him pretty easily (unusual) and was walking with one of his legs held mostly out in front of him. I brought him...

    Young chickens/no eggs

Thanks. They aren't 100% free range. They get about an hour a day to forage for grass and bugs I've never had chicks not lay throughout their first year including winter, but I've never had bantam hens before, either.

    Young chickens/no eggs

I have 3 chicks that were born in April. One was injured about the time the other 2 started laying, but she has never laid an egg. She had a head injury, but after about 6 weeks of me hand feeding her and some water therapy, she is 98% normal. For her, I doubt if she will ever lay an egg, but...

    Chickens not laying

Most chickens will lay throughout their first year, but their second fall/early winter, egg production will drop or even stop (because of molting and shorter days). For me in Ga, egg production usually picks up again sometime in January. I don't use any supplemental light, but when mine are...

changes in feed for extreme winter hens.

I grow my own mealworms in the summer. You can separate them out and refrigerate them in batches to feed to your birds throughout the year

changes in feed for extreme winter hens.

I give mine a handful of scratch and mix in oatmeal when they are regrowing feathers. I've also been known to cook and feed warm oatmeal on super cold days, and make sure they have a place to get in out of the wind and where they can snuggle up together if the feel chilled.

    Injured pullet not laying

Thanks everyone! I thought about putting a light on her, but I really want her to have the time she needs to heal completely and since she's under a year and inside the house, she should lay throughout this first winter anyway. In my experience, they slow down once they begin molting in their...

    Injured pullet not laying

She's inside the house because she couldn't stand and even when she started walking again, she wasn't scratching and the other 2 hens were picking on her. I may wait until the weather warms in the spring before putting her back outside.....

    Injured pullet not laying

She's begun cackling like she's laying an egg, so maybe she'll start soon. Thanks! I was thinking maybe she wasn't laying because of healing. I guess only time will tell!
