We are in the process of building a new chicken coop/henhouse. It is quite the "Taj Mahal" compared to where they are at present. (I hope to post pics when finished.)
Looking for any advice, tips, instructions, etc. on getting the flock to start using the new place, when complete.
Thanks in...
I have 10 pullets that are about 8 weeks old - Americaunas and Production Reds.
I already have 3 big ones in my flock - 1 Aracauna Roo and 1 hen, and a RIR hen. These are all about 1 1/2 years old. These hens lay regulary.
My question is when and how should I integrate the younger ones with...
We have one Aracauna Roo named RED. He has 3 gals: LISA (Aracauna) has been with him from the beginning, so she's the Queen.
Then we got JOLEEN (Aracauna) and RUBY (Rhode Island Red). I named them these names because "they came in to try to take Lisa's man".
Listen to some old country songs...
I'm glad there are others thinking this same way - gardening with chickens. I'm definently going to subscribe to this thread.
As I was getting my garden area ready a few weeks ago, I let my gals and guy in there to help till and fertilize - which was great! At that time I also threw some...

I am going to get 2 or 3 more hens and I want to get some that are already laying, (since mine have not laid any eggs yet and, well,. . . . . 3 of them are Roos !!!!!)
How long should I keep the new ones away from the others, to prevent any spread of disease?
Thanks for all the advice.
I have a small flock of only 4. We definently have 2 Roos and I now anther one has started to crow. I actually thought this little red one was a hen, but it's now trying to crow.
Is this a sign that it is a Roo or do chickens imitate each other? I've also read that some hens crow. Is this...
We have 4; 2 Roos and 2 hens. The Roos are FRED and ZSU-ZSU (pronounced Zoo-Zoo). The others are LITTLE RED and LISA. Yes, "Lisa". My husband named that one . . . still trying to figure that one out.
Little Red reminds me of a hen from a childhood story named Henny-Penny.
Love them all and...
OK, I think this might be the right thread to post my concerns.
I have 4 chickens. When I got them, (back in mid-June), the farmer said they were 4-5 months old (which is approx. 16-20 weeks, right?). I think I have 2 Aracauna hens, 1 big RIR (based on pics I've seen of others) and 1, well...

Might not be a good idea with chickens who like to peck at shiny or odd things! At least if they peck at the bands, they don't get hurt since it is plastic getting pecked. But nail polish could lead to toes getting pecked.
They sure do !!! I have to make sure to wear closed-toe shoes...

I was just about to ask, "Why would you need to leg-band them?", but here is your answer. Thanks for the info. I have only 4 right now, and I think one is a Roo. But I'll keep this in mind as my flock grows.
I've watched my cats do the same thing when they have something sticky...
OMG !!!! What a great idea! OK, now I'm on the look-out for an old camper for my next coop. We'll be needing to upgrade in a couple of years, I think.
It looks awesome !
I just dump a big pile of dirt/sand in a couple of places in the run, and as someone else mentioned, they had their way with it. Loved it! When it got pretty evened out I then mixed in some DE. They also make their own spots wherever thay want.
I do have a question about this winter though...
