Straw or hay for nest boxes- preference?

I buy artificial turf on Amazon and cut to size. Easy to pull out and knock against fence post or side of coop to clean off and put back. Easy to spray off with water hose if pooped on. Haven't found a down side yet.

My chickens will not go in their nesting box!!

Welcome to the forum. My first batch of chicks went from a brooder to a chicken tractor without a roost bar. Very low to the ground and they slept in a pile like puppies when not in the coop part. When I put them in a proper coop the first thing they did was start sleeping either on the ground...

What do you do with all those eggs?

My 10 year old granddaughter sells my excess. She runs a lucrative lemonade/fresh eggs/arts and craft/ venture. It's just me and hubby at home now but we love eggs in many versions and a quiche or breakfast casserole uses up several at the time. I scramble or hard boil to add to dog kibble (3...

Meal worms: Super Expensive Form of Protein?

Meal worms in any form are very expensive. So I raise my own and my chickens and blue birds go WILD for them. Easiest things in the world to raise. I bought 2,000 as my starter set from my local wild bird store and a plastic 3 drawer set from Walmart on sale. I put a 5 lb. bag (I used wheat...

How 'extra' do I have to be?

Before Google, the t.v. program "House" was my daughter's medical diagnostic too. Of course she could only survive so many of those diseases before I had to drag her back to reality. So I know exactly what you mean. Good luck and have fun with your new farm babies!

    Fence height

I have 4 Andalusians and that fly right over my 7 ft. fence so I put a light weight net over it and no problems. I have 2 Silkies and 2 frizzles that can "kinda flY' about 3 ft. off the ground for a yard or so. My 4 Cinnamon Queens showed little interest in flying over about 4 ft. high through...

Flock block - do you use one?

I've given mine flock blocks and even suet blocks for wild birds I find on sale. However, much cheaper is putting fresh veggies in a suet feeder to hang in the run. I'll buy a cabbage and slice thick enough to push into a suet feeder. Or big chunks of carrots. Cauliflower, pumpkin, watermelon or...

How Did I Become a Crazy Chicken Lady?!

I've casually researched chickens for quite a while. We have 16 acres, lots of horses and love fresh eggs. And I love to research just about anything! When my friend who works at the local Farmers Co-op saw 3 springs chicks that did not fare well in shipping he couldn't let them die (in spite of...

    Brand New To Tending Chickens

I've always lived in rural areas but my animals have been limited to horses, dogs and cats. I board horses for people, one of which works for a Farmers Co-op. When chicks came to the store in the spring he rescued 3 that were damaged in shipping. Rather he handed them off to another of my...
