Math Ace,
I"m SURE they aren't all from Bev's lineage. They are from at least 2, possibly 3 pens. At a month old, 8 of them were twice the size of the remaining 4. It was mind-boggling! I was told the larger ones were Bev's. They are finally looking closer to the same size now. I...

Brenda, the pictures are of the ones from Green Fire Farms - - right?
Did you get them from eggs you hatched or did you get shipped chicks ? ?
Math Ace,
I purchased them as day-old chicks. $200 with shipping. They're starting to look better every day. I've got a couple nicer...
I have a questions regarding comb color for hens and roosters. Mine range from pale orange to bright red for both sexes. Which is more correct and do they change with maturity?
Thank you,
Brenda
This one has a larger, redder comb, but I think she's a hen.
One of my roosters.
I caught these guys free-ranging in the compost pile. The rest of them went into the woods. I have 12 from Greenfire Farms.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks, Brenda
Edited to say they were born...
Has anyone else noticed how soft Marans feathers are? My chicks are from Green Fire Farms and are 2 months old. Will they always be this soft? They are getting more attractive every day.
Brenda
I had the same slow/poor experience with communication from Green Fire. They took 6 weeks to ship my chicks, three longer than they quoted. But, they want payment with order, not shipment. Also I was VERY disappointed with 3 out of 12 birds shipped. They still have minimal feathers and are...
This spring I purchased 12 Buckeye chicks from Brad Judge in Ann Arbor, MI for $3.50 each and ordered 12 Black Copper Marans from Paul at Green Fire Farms for $12.50 each. I "thought" I would LOVE the Marans and the Buckeyes were a afterthought. Well I was so wrong! The Buckeye are so much...
Not sure what we're going to do long-term. Our run area is 10x18 with 6' high chicken wire. I'm just going to keep the ramp closed to the coop and make a shelter area for right now. The rest of the chickens free-range during the day and go in the coop at night. I'm afraid that if we let them...
We have a Silver Spangled Hamburg hen who NEVER goes in the coop at night. Yesterday she came into the yard with four newly hatched chicks. Luckily our only roosters right now our Hamburgs! I've read they rarely go broody, so she must be an exception. They are adorable. BUT today a Sussex...

Several people did comment on those birds last year and how quickly they did grow. They were very fast growing, healthy birds. The mature roosters are fairly large now with nice confirmation. Those birds came from Donna Gerhke. Her birds have very nice confirmation and size. They...

After just getting back into chickens since I was in 4H 20 years ago, I purchased 12 Buckeye chicks from Brad Judge in Ann Arbor, MI. My birds act the way you describe yours. They are a delight! It's a sight to see all of them come running around the corner of the coop to see what I...
I ordered a dozen chicks from Green Fire Farms. They arrived 3 weeks later than original date and communication with him was poor. I sent him an e-mail a week ago and still haven't had a response. I wasn't impressed. It appears that I received chickens from 3 distinct lineages. The largest...
