And I bet all you did was get upset and say bad puppy. Or in my case say : bad chickens, bad chickens!!! I did get to eat " 3 Fresh Organically Grown Blueberries", before they wiped out my plants. They have more than paid me back with more than 20 dozen eggs some being Double Yokers. Well that's...

    Growing fodder for chickens

If you are like me, I will give my girls whatever they will eat as long as they eat something green during the winter. Now I do give them cabbage, but it has to be cooked "la dente" and well seasoned. They will not it raw cabbage. If there is some extra warm broth left in with the cabbage they...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Love the idea. I tried rye grass seed. It came up very nice. But there was still too much greenery for them to eat. My girls did not even touch it. But leave an herb or blueberry plants where they can get to it and they will eat it down to the roots. Thanks for the info. I am going to try this...

Hey Northerners: What is the absolute coldest air temps your chickens have experienced happily!

Thank you for your comment. My girls are spoiled and enjoy the warmth. There is ventilation so no humidity is present. In fact, when I let them out and it's cold they will opt to go back into the greenhouse. This greenhouse only houses them and no plants. When the go into the other greenhouse...

Hey Northerners: What is the absolute coldest air temps your chickens have experienced happily!

Okay, down here in Texas the humidity is through the roof. So the cold just feels colder. This past week we had a cold front come through. Temps went from 70's to 40's in about an hour. Then the wind picked up to about 30mph. The front was a day early. Four of my five girls were easily put in...

Well here at the "Chicken Ranch" the girls are nice and toasty. The weather has been raw for Texas. My girls went into the greenhouse a week ago and have no plans on getting out any time soon. Went to check on them, they felt the cold wet wind and ran back in. I have a small heater and it is...

    When will she lay?

For what it is worth, my girls Barr's squak before they lay eggs. My girls started laying 5 months and 3 days in age. I bought them as day old chicks. My Barr's lay speckled brown eggs. They start out as Pee Wee size and after a month or so they get to the medium - large size. All of thisbis by...

Thank all of you for the friendly welcome. Will take all advice given to heart and make a decision. As for my girls, the like roosting in the trees. That is except when the weather is below 40 degrees, then it is off the the green house. They all follow me as long as I wave a bag of goodies...

My girls are just the best thing I could have done. Currently I have 5 chickens. My biggest concern is they have slowed down in the egg laying. Maurine a Welsummer is my heaviest egg laying and size. She lays a double yolked egg every other week. My biggest concern is that they have bascally...
