I never taught mine to come back for treats. Mine only get treats outside of their coop. They all return and roost inside the coop at night though.... once in blue moon somebody gets "lost" and we have to go find them and stick them in.
The chickens figured out that scratch comes from the feed...
I know whenever something "good" has been found because I'll see one chicken being hotly pursued by the other 19. Anything from a grasshopper to a live mouse.
Daisy and Assquack
I let my girls name their ducks and pretty much figured Daisy was par for the course but Assquack!!?? Upon questioning the small child she informed me that is what "the big white duck on TV's name is". Uh no, that would be the Aflac duck!
Her duck proved to be one very...
It's possible he had evidence of the crest... he was completely covered in poop when I bought him. I couldn't tell anything about him really, just a big sticky, matted mess. Kids were begging and I just couldn't leave them there like that. They were the only 2 ducks left and were jammed in a...
Oh dear. I bought 2 ducklings at the feed store who told me they were Pekin ducks. The one duck almost immediately grew a poof on his head which I assumed were his feathers starting to grow in until I realized that his white feathers were all coming in and the poof wasn't going away. Inquired at...
We have POOP!
Never thought I would be happy about this but despite eating/drinking, we've had no poop. Well she made up for that this morning. I think she pooped half her body weight.
She is refusing to eat laying feed. She will eat game bird feed though (I think she likes the crumbles vs...
My vet said to rinse the wounds with plain cold water and then coat it in TriCare. I've got a dog-mauled chicken recovering right now.
TriCare seems to be my vets go-to (he's now told me to use it on 3 different horses as well as a gash on my dog he noticed while out treating a horse and now...
She's eating and drinking a little bit. She either perches on the side of the laundry basket or snuggles in it and if I stick food/water right under her beak, she will take a bit.
She ate about 1/3 of an egg yolk hardboiled, a small amount of cracked corn, a teeny bit of turkey feed and some...
The neighbor's dog was over here AGAIN last night, I didn't see anything but the neighbor hauling his dog away as I was leaving. Sent kid out to check on the chickens and she said everyone was fine... well she miscounted and this morning a frost covered chicken came slowly walking up to me.
Her...
Because we didn't see what happened the first time, my child just found her absolute favorite chicken nearly decapitated and the neighbors were claiming their dog was in their view the entire time and didn't do it. The day AFTER that the dog came back twice and the second time, I saw it chasing...
We know for sure it's the dog, after it was over here terrorizing my dog, it came back over that night and I SAW it catching chickens. It grabbed an Americauna by the tail who escape with a naked butt and then jumped after a Black sex link and ripped a mouthful of feathers out of her then...
I feel your pain. My child's pride and joy (a gigantic cochin that laid an egg *maybe* 1x per year and took great pride in pecking me) was decapitated. Neighbor's of course are claiming that it wasn't their dog that has repeatedly escaped and chased our chickens.....guess who was back and had an...
The missing chickens showed up this morning at my back door squawking for breakfast. Never been so happy to get a 4am wake-up call!
It was definitely the neighbor's dog...she too showed up (after I locked up the missing chickens) and she's got blood on her.
Hubby is going over there tonight...
Hysterical child found a nearly decapitated hen today. We free-range our chickens as the ONLY predator we have seen (or lost a chicken to) in the past several years is a coyote.
Chicken appears to have no signs of trauma other than she now resembles Nearly Headless Nick from Harry Potter. 2...
