Thanks for the info. Yes, all 4 pullets have slate colored shanks. Thank you also for the breeder referrals. I will get in contact with them and hopefully find myself a quality too (and maybe another hen or 2).

Just getting started with Marans and definitely have a LONG way to go, so need opinions from you more veteran breeders out there.
In April I received 3 BC Marans chicks (along with some other breeds). I've got a trio. The cockrel is definitely wanting as far as proper breed...
You know...I'm looking at your pullet and she looks to have a single comb (though sometimes it's hard to tell from a photo sometimes). I don't see any hint of a beard or muffs and the shanks aren't indicative of an Americauna or an Easter Egger. Why did they say they felt this could be a cross?

I'm sure my lone cockrel is less than desireable as far as Marans traits and the pullets do not have feathering on the shanks. Right now they are just here for the eggs, but I hope to acquire some nicer hens (and maybe a roo), at the Marans show...
Could you elaborate on your culling method? Are you culling based on less white in the face or more? At what age are you culling?

They look to be Welsummers. I've had this breed a couple years now and besides being very attractive, they lay a beautiful terra cotta colored egg.
