Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Okay... so, what do you do with a mossy chicken? what do you do with a cockerel? What do you do with a mossy chicken when you've had your fill? To the tune of drunken sailor. I hate getting rid of chicks. Esp when they are cockerels and you know no one wants them.

The hardest part of trying to raise good SOP type chickens is doing all the culling necessary to get to where you can raise a good one.

Ditto.

As stated in the Black Copper thread, don't use them for breeding. If they are females, I'd just keep them in your layer pen for eggs. If males, grow them out until they're large enough to eat, and then do so...or list them for free on CL. To say "no one wants them" would be shocking to me. Around here, there are plenty of folks who will take them - you just need to know up front they are eating them. That is what chickens were raised for in addition to eggs, after all. It's all part of the circle of life.

Most breeders only keep 10% of what they hatch. Think on that. 1 out of 10. That's not much, but to improve your flock, it's what you must be willing to do.

I thought I was a toughie when I started. The first flock I ever had was processed for meat at a few years old along with some meat birds. Then I didn't keep chickens for a while. Recently I culled every single chicken I had here. THAT was tough. I processed a few for meat and while that is morally satisfying it does take more time and guts-- pun acknowledged. I am going to sound like a real pansy now but I had nightmares for almost two weeks after culling so many birds in so short a time. I did it for business/peace of mind reasons. I think culling the kids' pet chickens as well as chicks was what did it. I understand now why folks cull at such an early age: easier on time and money and space and easier of a task. I don't find any chicken other than the Chantecler has been any good for meat. I was let down every time so it is a big of a waste when I can raise ducks for meat faster and cheaper. I am not keeping chickens for meat anymore. I don't have a problem with anyone else eating them. At this point I have young birds as I am starting over entirely. I can't imagine anyone wants those little birds but I will give CL a try.

They look to be Welsummers. I've had this breed a couple years now and besides being very attractive, they lay a beautiful terra cotta colored egg.

I have just purchased my first Cucoo Maran. Hope the spelling is correct. I have named her Milly short for Mildred. She is 4 months old. She is a really good looking bird. Hope to get some nice brown eggs from her in the future.

i want to report that I have been culling based on the amount of white on the faces and I have the vast majority have copper hackles at 6 weeks. still. culling for all the other stuff too. also my eye color is improving in these girls too yeah!

I have a French Blue Copper Rooster - very good looking - about 10 months old - very mean. As soon as I get another decent looking rooster - he's stewmeat. :/
