Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

New to Marans and got this guy from a local breeder was wanting some input to see if he is breeding worthy. I know it's not the best pic.

Hi there: I am in Tupelo MS and am interested in knowing more about your Sebastapol geese. I am new to the forum. Not new to chickens. I have a hodge podge of chickens. Mostly silkie crosses and don't know my chicken breeds well enough to say what else. Frizzle, frazzles...I have some that I think are quite beautiful. We live on a farm with several barns and I bought two ready made little houses for my chickens. I just like my feathered friends. We do show Bouviers and Westie and have registered goats and horses, but the none of my chickens have papers...same with the cats, but that doesn't mean I don't love and take care of them. I have never posted on a forum so I don't know how this works. Sorry if I have made a huge mess. best, [email protected]

glad you are joining us. Forums take a bit to get the hang of, but there are hundreds of conversations going on at once, called 'threads' if you look towards the bottom of this page you will see the 'Forum Nav:" bar, where you can select different parts to visit, like this is the Marans Thread, there are other chicken breed threads and some for ducks and geese, also ones about feeding, coop building and many other topics. Under each of those headings there are different conversations going on about specific things under that heading. Took me a couple weeks to learn my way around here.

Most chickens don't have 'paper's' but are judged on their own merits....

i want to report that I have been culling based on the amount of white on the faces and I have the vast majority have copper hackles at 6 weeks. still. culling for all the other stuff too. also my eye color is improving in these girls too yeah!

So you are culling the ones with alot of white on the face?

I am culling the ones with solid faces or NO white and culling the ones with too much white. Do you remember I posted some chick pics a few weeks ago on one of the Marans threads? I kinda think it was the BBS copper thread but not sure.

I have a question? Is it normal to get a BCMs chick that has white on the face like the pic below. Iv'e hatched 3 batches and this is the first time this has happened

Oh yes sorry i should have looked a few posts back, the one boy i kept wh ohad the extreme white face is now 2months, he is not gettind color yet either while most of his siblins have copper already, im so excited to see how they turn out this is my first F1 generation from my own picks.

no matter the breed our Roo is nuts, he flew into our kitchen yesterday. I was just washing the dishes

I was told my 7 week old Splash could of been from a Splash hen and Americauna Roo. How can I tell if she is mixed or not?

Hello, newbie from Oklahoma here. I bought some French Marans at an auction in Newcastle Ok lastnight. I got 2 trios and im pretty sure 3 of the hens are Cuckoos but not sure what the other one is and not sure what the roosters are either. One maybe a Golden Cuckoo?? Can anybody help me ID them? The last picture is what im guessing Cuckoo and the other two not pictured look exactly like her.

Ok these are what I thought were Black Copper. Lady said she has French Copper and English Copper. Never even heard of the latter. Can anyone tell me what these almost 7 year olds are? Also could be like the Splash I posted and be mixed!



the little black one in front is a rir/ mixed with either cuckoo maran or a black sex link!
