Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

wow, yours have much bigger and redder combs than mine do at a younger age. why is that?
If yours are younger, that is probably why they may not have matured enough to develope larger, redder combs and wattles.
That said, it may also be that you've more hens in your flock.
Based on this phot, I am thinking the bird on the far right may be a male, a cockerel.
The other 2 in the photo, is hard to tell based on the position they are in.
FYI: these birds pictured in my quote are not mine.

Thanks Chickielady,

Seasons depend whether you are in the north or the south of the country. South have wet season in the winter - now. North have wet in the summer.........

We do have some French Marans here, mostly wheaten, with a few BC. I have wheaten and blue wheaten. Egg colour here is pretty poor, comparatively. But that's ok, more of a challenge.

And then I also NEED, not want, olive eggers............ so had to buy a couple of araucanas.

Well, after listening to the horrible drop bear stories & tales of gilana-lizards eating entire flocks of poultry/firestorms/hopefully enough water storage...I do miss Lakelands..(( as I recall she & others were in the western upper part of Aus.))..I should go back on WA trader & see how they are all getting by~~they tease me relentlessly, all due to the fact that I thought WA poultry trader was WASHINGTON, and in so doing I am now a member of Western Australia Poultry Trader !!!!!!!! After a few days I figured out I was on the wrong continent !!!!!!!!!!

The same with mine. They are French Marina. Very sweet easy going birds.. And such nice eggs.

You can get a mix of anything (temperment wise) with any breed. My Cuckoo Marans are sweet birds, there is not a mean one in the flock. They lay year round here, even in winter...and usually 2 out of 12 will go broody and are excellent moms. But, that said, I cannot speak for someone elses' flock temperment. Now with Golden Cuckoo is the same issue, from flock to flock you may encounter issues, so ask when you purchase, ask before you purchase.

I myself have never seen a mean Marans of any color. If anyone has, please 'splain !
