I'm not to concerned about consumption. I'll see if anything changes in the next couple weeks. All of the chickens seem healthy from appearance nothing points to an illness and previous owner said never seen that before. Guessing it is stress related. I'll throw down some cracked corn for...
So in a few months our chickens will be heading to their Summer home at the cottage. My plan is to take my already made coop up there and use that and build a new coop here at my house. Anyway we have an Eagle's nest not far from our cottage (next fire rd. over). I'm hoping they might leave once...
I checked out the dirty vent feather chicken and everything seems normal no sign of worms or infection in that area. I will trim off the yuck. I checked all the chickens last night for signs of an impacted crop or anything unusual. The one might have a frost bitten comb it was kind of tough to...
Maybe, I mean it's a new place, new run, new coop. All of the chickens are the same age except the 2 Easter eggers that are about 8 months old. The coop has the top between the perlins and the gable for ventilation. I've never seen a build up of moisture or anything of the sort on the inside of...
So as of yesterday one of our hens has been laying progressively wrinklier or more lumpy. Here is a picture of the latest egg. This is from a Rhode Island Red about 1 year old. I have had her for about 2 months got her from a colleague of mine that was moving and couldn't take their chickens. I...
Well the coop has been in the run with the larger chickens for 1 week and today we have the one end lifted enough for the chicks to be able to run in and out. Hoping all goes as planned one of my EE and one RIR is giving the chicks a hard time when they are together in the run (while be...
This will be in the run.
Right now our overnights are still dipping into the teens so im waiting another couple weeks until i put this outside full time
Really not bad, they rarely venture to the other side of the mini run without one another also i just figured out i screwed up their age. They are 5 weeks old.
I'll also add it has a plywood floor so I can use it indoors when the chicks are smaller and need that constant heat still. They are loving it right now next to the wood stove. Looking forward to some warmer temps in a couple weeks so we can start to transition them into the coop with the big girls.
Heat source is a heating pad under the boxed in area with insulation in the box walls and on the bottom of the heating pad.
We have (6) 8 week old chicks in it right now. The bottom 8" has 1/2" hardware cloth from the 2x6 up. This is just to enclose them on our patio. The plan was to add 2...
As of right now 5 birds in a fresh run brand new about a week ago
So I'll grab some grit and oyster shells. Can I just spread the grit in the bottom of the run? I was thinking this wouldn't be much different than naturally scrounging. Also they are getting more free ranging time as they have...
Our run is 30x15 coming off our coop, the plan is to cover it by winter so the chickens have some bare ground during the winter.
Also with our chicks (approx. 8 weeks) should they be getting grit with their grower/starter feed (crumble)?
