    Graphic Prolapse

We just culled. It was the kindest thing. Thanks for the support Chicalina.

    Graphic Prolapse

I just got home and one of my hens has an apparent pro-lapse. It’s terrible. I’m thinking there’s no other option than to cull. Anyone have a hen like this that recovered from a prolapse this bad?

    Leave Oyster Shells Out?

When our flock was smaller, wild birds would come in. But, they steer clear now that there’s more activity. If we thin down the flock, I’ll remember the parasitic threat. Thanks for the tip!

    Leave Oyster Shells Out?

They are in a covered spot, but thanks for the tip. I’ll check now and again to be sure they are staying dry.

    Leave Oyster Shells Out?

Do oyster shells attract predators? I’d like to just leave them outside 24-7. Thanks for any insight!

    Old English Game Bantams

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! My flock has lots of room to roam, so thinking they’ll all do great together.

    Old English Game Bantams

First time OEG mamma! Millie Fleur in coloring. I thought they were going to be d'Uccle Bantams, but they came clean legged. The hatchery order got messed up, but I’m pretty excited about these two! I always admired the beauty of OEG, but I thought they were on the aggressive side. However, from...

Giving a broody Muscovy hen newly hatched ducklings. Will it work?

I just tried to put newly hatched Cayuga ducklings under our broody Muscovy that has been sitting for weeks. She’s been so diligent with her eggs, so I had high hopes. But, no doubt about it, she wanted to kill them!! I just had a broody cochin bantam take a turkey baby. If she wasn’t busy...

    Heat lamp vs Heating Pad

Personally, I prefer straw to hay. Straw has hollow centers, so it’s insulating. Also, straw doesn’t absorb water like hay does. But, this probably makes more of a difference for animals that sleep on the ground (like ducks) than it does for roosting or nesting chickens.

    Heat lamp vs Heating Pad

I just saw where beekeepers use campaign signs to insulate their hives over the winter! I think this would be a fantastic option for backyard coops!! Even in our large barn, I lose a lot of square footage when lining with straw bales. The corrugated plastic would probably last quite awhile. I...
