    Chicken sick, away on vacation

Okay, sounds good! Should I, in the meantime, try to give her some liquid nutrients via syringe? If so, what sort of substance/medium should I use for that?

    Chicken sick, away on vacation

It has been unseasonably warm where we are. Yesterday it was 100 degrees F, something we start to have in August, and it’s not even summer yet. Our setup is quite well-shaded though. She is a Welsummer, do they have a reputation for doing poor in the heat?

I have not- that was something I’ve been thinking about, as it would explain her being underweight. But would worms affect her appetite? If anything, I would think it would increase. But it’s worth a try, what medicine do you recommend?

    Chicken sick, away on vacation

We are back from vacation now; the last few days before we left I got a text from the sitter saying Summer appeared to be recovering. Came back and she is still off, but relatively better from what I saw from the photos the sitter sent me when she was looking really sick. I picked her up first...

    Chicken sick, away on vacation

Hi, So our pet sitter has noticed one of our hens, Summer (2-year old Welsummer) looking lethargic, with a floppy comb and lack of appetite - very general symptoms. She looked somewhat iffy once or twice over the past few weeks, but she seemed fine the next day each time. We are away and will...

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

Hi, So sorry for the late reply, I for some reason stopped getting notifications from this thread and forgot to respond. Unfortunately Snowpea didn’t make it. Due to weather conditions and ice on the road, we couldn’t get her to the vet, as their offices were all closed. There was a practice...

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

A few hours ago I gave her more of the same stuff, but this time I felt her crop beforehand. It went down a little but that’s because the fluids moved through. It hasn’t changed much at all. However, I did see some more poop. It looks like this:

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

About 15 minutes ago I again gave mineral oil, egg, and water w/electrolytes. When I massaged the crop, it was really full and even more squishy, but this could be because I just gave her a bunch of fluid. Her poops are small and watery, no substance to them yet.

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

Ok, so in the last 30 min I gave her 10 mL of mineral oil, 10 mL of water, and then 10 mL of egg yolk, with a bit of water to flush it down. I also gave her a very thorough crop massage with both massaging and squeezing, a bit upward and also downward. The crop still has that...

Also, I’ve been syringing water to give her fluids. Does that work, will it go through the crop? And how much should I give how often? I don’t want to overwhelm her

So it turns out we don’t have coconut oil, but have canola and mineral oil. Is there one of these that works best?

Ok, thank you, this is encouraging me to keep up with the massages. I will give her some coconut oil too, to see if that helps at all. For how long did you massage at a time?

We do have coconut oil. How much should I give her (mL)? I can continue massaging as well. That’s good to know.

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

The crop feels doughy, with lots of pieces of grain. It’s really hard for me to tell if there are any large fibrous pieces- most of the area around the crop is bald, but the side of the crop still has feathers and I can’t tell if that’s what’s creating the lumpy texture or if it’s coming from...

EMERGENCY Impacted crop, starving, can’t go to vet

Crop was initially fairly hard but has gotten somewhat squishy but feels really full and it’s gurgling like sour crop. She’s not eating, and I sat her in a plastic box filled with pine shavings, paper towels, and a bowl of water in a room on the side of the house. I administered 10ml of olive...
